The most common error in blitzes continues to go unnoticed by many drivers, but it can result in an immediate fine, add points to the driver’s license (CNH), and even lead to the retention of the vehicle during inspections.
This number represents a reduction compared to the 21,354 cases recorded in the first quarter of 2023. Despite this improvement, the models of cars most targeted by criminals have not shown significant changes.
The Most Stolen Vehicles
The Volkswagen Gol maintained its position as the most stolen car in São Paulo, with 1,342 occurrences recorded. This number, although high, represents a reduction compared to the 1,618 cases in 2023.
The Chevrolet Onix and the Fiat Uno swapped their positions compared to last year, with the Onix in second place with 885 cases and the Uno in third, with 868.
Here is the complete list of the most stolen vehicles in the first quarter of 2024:
- Volkswagen Gol: 1,342 cases
- Chevrolet Onix: 885 cases
- Fiat Uno: 868 cases
- Hyundai HB20: 864 cases
- Chevrolet Corsa: 847 cases

The Substitution of Models and the Reasons Behind the Thefts
An interesting point in the comparison of the years is the substitution of the Renault Sandero by the Fiat Strada in the 2024 list. The Strada, which is the best-selling model in Brazil until May 2024 with 49,050 registrations, became the eighth most stolen car in the state.
According to Ituran Brasil, the demand for parts from older vehicles in the parallel market is one of the main reasons for these thefts. Vehicles such as the Chevrolet Onix, Hyundai HB20, Fiat Argo, and Fiat Strada still have current generations in production, but they are exceptions in a list dominated by older models.
Decline in the Index by Cities
The capital of São Paulo continues to lead the rankings among cities with the highest rates of vehicle theft and burglary, despite a 3% reduction in occurrences. The number of cases fell from 9,158 in the first quarter of 2023 to 8,858 in 2024. Neighborhoods such as Tatuapé, Itaquera, Vila Matilde, and Sapopemba, all in the East Zone, are the most affected.
Other cities also showed significant declines:
- Santo André: decrease of 21%
- São Bernardo do Campo: decrease of 13%
- Campinas: decrease of 4%
On the other hand, Guarulhos was the only city that showed an increase of 14% in cases, rising from 722 to 825 occurrences in the same period.
A Long Way to the End of the Cases
The 11% reduction in vehicle thefts and burglaries in São Paulo is a relief for residents, but the data shows that there is still a long way to go.
Older models continue to be the main targets, and the demand for parts in the parallel market keeps these vehicles attractive to criminals.
In this sense, it is noted that the capital of São Paulo and cities like Guarulhos must continue to implement security measures to combat this problem, while vehicle owners need to be increasingly vigilant and informed about the best ways to protect their assets.
