Government of São Paulo Injects R$ 500 Million to Reactivate Tourism in the North Coast
The Government of São Paulo announced a credit line of R $500 million aimed at recovering infrastructure and businesses on the north coast of the state, affected by the tragic rains that devastated the region during Carnival. This initiative is part of a set of actions for the resumption of tourism in the area presented by state authorities and representatives of the municipalities.
Unfortunately, the landslides resulted in at least 65 lost lives, including 64 in São Sebastião and 1 in Ubatuba, as well as more than 2,200 displaced or homeless individuals. In light of this distressing situation, the population faces deep sadness for all those who lost their lives, along with a feeling of despair due to the decline in tourism, the main economic activity of the region.
The City Hall of Ubatuba joined the appeals of local business owners and requested that tourists return to the municipality within the measures planned to preserve their health and safety; many services were already normal after the rains. However, an additional financing of R $100 million was announced for micro and small entrepreneurs in the tourism sector, including specialized platforms for business plan preparation and guidance in partnership with Sebrae-SP.
A campaign to encourage tourism was also promised as soon as the responsible authorities give the green light to resume activities in this region. Colonel Henguel Pereira, Chief Secretary of the State Civil Defense, highlighted that São Sebastião still has delicate areas, requiring caution in the reopening of tourist services. Finally, he warned about the heavy rainfall expected for Tuesday (28).
