The Government of Canada is currently accepting applications for the Vanier Graduate Scholarships program, which aims to provide scholarships for international doctoral students, including Brazilians. Established in 2008, the initiative focuses on helping Canadian universities attract students who excel in leadership skills and academic performance.
How Does the Selection Process for Scholarships in Canada Work?
Eligible to participate in the Vanier program in Canada are students in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health areas from anywhere in the world. Each year, the program selects 166 new scholars in doctoral programs. In total, there are over 500 scholarships ongoing at all times.
On the official program website, it is suggested that interested candidates seek to secure a nomination only from the institution where they wish to study. To compete for scholarships in Canada, applicants must go through the selection process of the institution they wish to attend. Afterward, the Canadian university will nominate the student to compete for slots to host Vanier scholars.

How to Apply and Compete for Scholarships in Canada?
Applicants can apply directly to the program. The program’s website indicates that candidates read the Selection Committee Guide before starting their application.
The document lists three evaluation criteria for scholars, in addition to providing information about each criterion. It is also necessary to review the page on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion to prepare the application.
According to the Vanier program in Canada for doctoral courses, the selection committees for Vanier graduate scholarships are multidisciplinary and, therefore, applications should be written with a non-specialized research audience in mind. Candidates who achieve an average score of at least 3.1 in each of the three criteria will be considered eligible for the scholarships.
The selected students for the scholarships receive CAD US$ 50,000 (around R$ 200,000) per year for the three years of the program duration. According to the program’s website, the selection criteria consider three equally weighted criteria, which are Academic Excellence, Research and Leadership, and Potential.
Those interested in participating in the Vanier program must prepare and submit the required documents by the deadline of the institution they wish to attend; deadlines may vary. Once approved, the university must request the candidate’s participation in the Vanier program by October 30.
Benefits of International Scholarships
One of the main benefits of studying abroad is the cultural enrichment that comes from immersion in a new society with different customs, traditions, and cuisine. This experience also broadens the understanding of cultural diversities and promotes greater tolerance for differences.
Another significant advantage is the opportunity to learn or improve a new language, as daily contact with natives of the destination country enhances the development of verbal and written communication skills, opening doors for future professional opportunities.
Additionally, many countries offer high-quality educational institutions and innovative academic programs. Thus, studying with renowned professors and having access to excellent environments are factors that attract students seeking high-level training.
