Public Transport Strike in Juiz de Fora Begins Tuesday (16) After Salary Impasse with Consortium Via JF
Strike in Public Transport in Juiz de Fora: What Changes for the Population
Public transport workers in Juiz de Fora have decided to go on strike indefinitely starting at midnight on Tuesday (16). The strike was approved in a category assembly last Thursday (11), after months of salary negotiations without agreement with the companies in the sector, including Consortium Via JF.
The measure, which will follow legal procedures, provides for the maintenance of a minimum number of buses in circulation, as determined by the legislation. Nevertheless, the routine of thousands of passengers will be directly impacted already at the beginning of next week.
Why the Workers Decided to Strike
According to the Urban Collective Transport Workers Union (Sintrro), the impasse in salary negotiations was the main reason for the decision. The negotiations have been ongoing since July, with mediation from the Regional Labor Management, but without significant progress.

The union reported that it has published the strike notice, informing both the competent authorities and the population of Juiz de Fora. “We are within the legality and will maintain the minimum number of buses on the streets, as required by law,” the entity stressed.
Position of Consortium Via JF
The Consortium Via JF, responsible for the urban collective transport in the city, stated in a note that the publication of the strike notice surprised them. The group emphasized that negotiations are still ongoing under the mediation of the Regional Labor Management.
According to the consortium, they have already presented a proposal that employers and workers are reviewing together, and they hope that the meeting scheduled for Monday (15) will bring a solution before total strike.
What the City Hall of Juiz de Fora Says
The City Hall of Juiz de Fora has also commented on the case. In response to the press, it declared that it respects the workers’ mobilization and hopes that negotiations advance to avoid further disruptions.
According to the municipal Executive, public transport is essential for the daily mobility of the population and, therefore, the administration closely monitors the developments of the talks between the union and Consortium Via JF.
Impact of the Strike on Public Transport
With the strike confirmed, thousands of public transport users are expected to face delays, long waits, and overcrowding on the buses that remain in circulation. The movement occurs during a time of high demand during peak hours, which increases the concern of passengers who rely exclusively on public transport.
Urban mobility experts warn that, in situations like this, dialogue between the parties is essential to avoid a collapse of the transport system in the city.
Perspectives and Next Steps
The assembly that defined the strike showed the dissatisfaction of the category, but there is still room for negotiation. If the meeting on Monday (15) results in a consensus, the start of the strike may be suspended.
Until then, the population needs to prepare for changes in their routine and should follow updates from the union, the city hall, and Consortium Via JF about which lines will operate during the strike.
