Rio de Janeiro, June 5, 2020 – In yet another action to support the fight against Covid-19 in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Nova Transportadora do Sudeste (NTS) is investing R$ 6 million to purchase hospital equipment that will be donated to health units in the state, especially those located in Baixada Fluminense. The initiative is divided into two phases, and in this first phase, part of the resources was directed to equipping the Policlínica Itália Franco in Japeri.
The donation enabled the establishment of 10 ICU beds, 10 UTI beds, and 20 ward beds for treating patients with Covid-19. Among the donated equipment are 10 ventilators, 20 monitors, 40 hospital beds with mattresses, in addition to other necessary items. The NTS initiative aims to assist in the activation and reactivation of beds in hospitals located within the company’s operating area.

Before the donation, the hospital – which is the only one in the municipality of Japeri – had two respirators, five ward beds, and no ICU beds. The daily average of patients treated at the unit, which also receives patients from neighboring cities Seropédica, Queimados, and Paracambi, is between 300 and 350. The equipment and beds delivered are already being occupied by patients who were on standby.
“We recently renovated the structure of the Policlínica, which means we have space, but we couldn’t invest in equipment. With this donation, we will be able to serve our citizens without needing to rely on transfers,” says the Health Secretary of the Municipality of Japeri, Rosi Moraes.
To manage the purchase and delivery of the hospital products, NTS is partnering with the Instituto da Criança and receiving support from the União Rio movement. According to the company’s management, the initiative aims to provide active assistance to the communities where NTS operates. The company has also encouraged solidarity actions among its employees, who last week donated more than 80 food baskets to charity organizations that support families in social vulnerability in Nova Iguaçu.
NTS has been mapping which municipalities in Rio de Janeiro have been most affected by Covid-19 to subsequently allocate the resources for the second phase of donations, which will allocate an additional R$ 3 million for equipping hospitals. The company is also considering establishing further partnerships with municipal agencies.
