Toward a Low-Emission Future: The Green Initiative of the Refinery
Hydro Alunorte, a refinery committed to sustainability, has taken a significant step toward its goal of becoming one of the world’s lowest-emission refineries by 2025. The company has adopted 10 electric vehicles, replacing fossil fuel-powered vehicles as part of its decarbonization strategy. This action reinforces Hydro Alunorte’s position as one of the most energy-efficient refineries in terms of emissions globally.
A Green Journey in Motion
The replacement of 10 fossil fuel vehicles with electric cars is not just a fleet change, but a milestone in Hydro Alunorte’s sustainability journey. According to Klebio Coelho, Planning and Contracts Management Manager at the refinery, this replacement will result in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 1,660 trees over five years.
These vehicles are already operational, primarily used for transportation within the refinery, to the Vila do Conde port, and to Vila dos Cabanos. With a range of 298 km and the ability to be charged at Hydro Alunorte’s fueling stations, these electric vehicles not only reduce the carbon footprint but also raise transportation standards with comfort and efficiency.

Three Chinese brands have already secured their presence in Brazil in 2026 and promise to heat up the competition with SUVs, technology, a network of stores, and even cars that can be maneuvered by remote control.
Sustainability and Innovation: The Way Forward
Allain Marczewski, Contracts Supervisor and Inspector at the refinery, highlights the additional benefits of electric vehicles, such as a quiet driving experience, instant torque, and energy regeneration, along with significant savings from not consuming energy when stopped in traffic. This change not only enhances transportation quality but also reflects a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Hydro Alunorte is not just following but also driving a national trend toward expanding the electric vehicle market. With a carbon emissions reduction of 60% to 80% over their lifespan compared to combustion vehicles, electric vehicles represent a significant solution for reducing carbon footprints. Furthermore, the refinery is inspiring its suppliers to seek more sustainable solutions, such as electrifying the air conditioning systems in employee transport buses.
Luzineth Leal, Contracts, Logistics, and Warehouse Manager at Hydro Alunorte, emphasizes that the company will continue to explore new ways to reduce its carbon footprint, signaling that the transition to a fully electric fleet is just the beginning. This commitment to sustainability not only places Hydro Alunorte at the forefront of environmental innovation but also contributes to a greener and more sustainable future for all.
