Committee Of More Than 100 Brazilian Businesspeople Travels To Washington To Attempt To Reverse The 50% Tariff Imposed By The United States.

The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) stated on Friday (29) that “it is not the time” to apply the Economic Reciprocity Law against the United States. The statement comes after the U.S. government imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian exports, with the Brazilian government considering retaliation.

The regulation authorizes Brazil to adopt countermeasures whenever trading partners create barriers against national products.

According to the entity’s president, Ricardo Alban, the situation requires caution because the priority is to seek diplomatic solutions. He highlighted that the best alternative is to intensify dialogue with the administration of Donald Trump.

Delegation Of Businesspeople In Washington

Alban announced that a delegation made up of more than 100 businesspeople and leaders of industrial associations will head to Washington next week.

The goal is to negotiate directly and attempt to reverse the effects of the large tariff.

“We need to seek in every way to maintain the strong and constructive relationship of more than 200 years between Brazil and the United States,” he said.

For him, the purpose of the mission is to open avenues for negotiations that lead to the reversal of the tax or, at the very least, the expansion of the exceptions already provided for.

Public Hearing And Defense Of Brazil

In Washington, the delegation will participate in bilateral meetings with American partners and preparatory meetings for the public hearing scheduled for September 3.

The event is part of the investigation opened in July by the Trump administration regarding alleged “unfair” trade practices by Brazil.

The CNI reinforced that it has already formally expressed its defense of the country. In the document, the entity argues that Brazil does not adopt discriminatory or restrictive measures that justify the tariff.

In addition, it reaffirms its willingness to maintain bilateral trade based on clear and balanced rules.
