Shell Brazil’s Revolutionary Project Explores Hydrogen to Reduce Emissions in Diesel Engines Used in Offshore Operations

In a strategic move to lead the decarbonization of the offshore industry, Shell Brazil, in collaboration with Ocyan and LZ Energia (Protium Dynamics business unit), is investing in an innovative research and development project. This initiative, which receives funding of R$17.7 million made possible through the R&D clause of the National Petroleum Agency (ANP), aims at the integration of hydrogen in diesel engines used in offshore operations for significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The project, named H2R (Hydrogen to Reduce Emissions and Consumption), has shown potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 10% and lower operational costs. The technology involved is being developed to enable the safe and efficient injection of hydrogen into internal combustion engines, such as those in drill ships and tankers, without the need for significant changes to the vessel structures.

Shell Achieves Excellent Results with This Technology

Eli Gomes, Shell’s Technology Project Manager, comments on the project’s progress: “We are optimistic about the results of the H2R project. The technology we are developing aims to enable the reduction of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing decisively to the decarbonization of the offshore oil and gas industry.”

The challenge of storing and transporting hydrogen in offshore operations is being addressed with an innovative solution that includes onboard hydrogen production on demand. This intelligent system is capable of continuously collecting data from the engines, interpreting it, and calculating the exact amount of hydrogen to be produced and injected.

Diesel Engines Remain Efficient Despite Hydrogen Injection

Igor Zornitta Zanella, director of LZ Energia, highlights the efficiency provided by hydrogen: “Hydrogen acts as a catalyst that optimizes fuel combustion. By adding small doses of hydrogen, combustion occurs with less ignition delay and more homogeneously, resulting in a more complete and efficient burn. This means that less fuel is needed to perform the same work.”

Since 2015, LZ Energia has been conducting studies and tests with this technology in truck engines. The results obtained demonstrate significant reductions in diesel consumption and emissions. The technology, now patented by LZ Energia, has also recently received international qualification from DNV, a renowned independent risk management certifier, further strengthening the development and implementation of the project.

Less Carbon Emissions

Rodrigo Chamusca, Executive Manager of Digital Business and Technology at Ocyan, emphasizes the project’s importance for sustainability: “This approval is crucial for the development of the project and aligns with Ocyan’s commitment to ensure sustainability and neutralize its carbon footprint by 2035.”

Shell Brazil reaffirms its commitment to innovation by investing around R$ 500 million annually in research and development, with about 30% of these resources allocated to projects focused on Energy Transition. This project not only promotes a cleaner and more sustainable future but also positions Shell, Ocyan, and LZ Energia at the forefront of carbon reduction technologies in the offshore sector.
