New River Connection Between Manaus and Four Pacific Ports Shortens Trade Routes, Strengthens Amazon Exports, and Enhances Regional Competitiveness
The federal government confirmed, in November 2025, the completion of works that allow continuous navigation between Manaus and four ports in the Pacific Ocean. The initiative arose because there was demand for shorter routes for South American trade, and thus it gained priority within the bilateral agreements established since 2023.
The proposal also aims to stimulate river tourism and strengthen the Amazonian bioeconomy. The route is already open.
Path Opened by Alto Solimões
The journey starts in Manaus and follows the Solimões River to Santo Antônio do Içá. The route became possible due to dredging in Alto Solimões, allowing for greater depth and safety.

In Dubai, rising tensions from the war in the Middle East are causing super-rich individuals to leave the Gulf and direct their fortunes to a new financial refuge in Asia.
In addition, this stretch serves as a base for several branches that connect Brazil to neighboring countries. The project aims to facilitate the circulation of products from the Manaus Free Trade Zone.
Connection with Colombia via Puerto Asís
One of the branches follows the Putumayo River, which in Brazil is called the Içá River. It originates in Colombia and runs parallel to the Japurá River until Puerto Asís.
From this point, there is road access to the Port of Tumaco, considered the second most important in Colombia on the Pacific. The expectation is that the new connection will make regional trade more agile. It’s an important advancement.
Routes Leading to Ecuador and Peru
Another route leads vessels from Santo Antônio do Içá to Iquitos, Peru. After this point, the path splits into three distinct options.
One reaches the Port of Manta in Ecuador. Another reaches Paita in northern Peru. The third goes to Chancay, a municipality located seventy-eight kilometers from Lima.
Each branch meets specific export demands. All three destinations are already active.
Growth of Amazon Exports
The first semester of 2025 recorded a significant increase in external sales of bioeconomy products leaving Tabatinga.
This occurred because logistical costs decreased and transportation became faster. Producers of açaí, nuts, coconut, flour, rubber, and fish experienced immediate gains.
Furthermore, the Manaus Free Trade Zone managed to expand the reach of items manufactured in the region. The impact was immediate.
Integration Advocated by the Government
According to the Ministry of Planning and Budget, only 15% of South American trade occurs within the region itself. Therefore, integration has become a political priority.
Minister Simone Tebet stated that the issue has been on President Lula’s agenda for a long time. The goal is to increase the circulation of goods using shorter routes and safe alternatives to traditional transportation. The directive involves various sectors.
Significant Investments in the New PAC
According to Revista Oeste, the five routes connecting South America have an estimated budget of 60 billion reais. The financial package totals 10 billion dollars to fund one hundred and ninety works, which include highways, waterways, railways, infoways, and airports.
This entire package is part of the New PAC and complements the strategy to boost the Amazon economy.
Faster Access to the Asian Market
The Port of Chancay, Peru, received Chinese investments and is expected to simplify the shipment of Brazilian products to Asia.
The minister explained that the route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, departing from Belém, can reduce the journey by up to three weeks, as it eliminates 10,000 kilometers from the trip.
Therefore, the expectation is to enhance the country’s competitiveness in strategic markets.
