The Itapoá Port Handled About 950,512 TEUs Last Year, This Represents More or Less 7.6% of Growth Compared to What Was Handled by the Terminal in 2021.
The number of ships that passed through the location also increased: there were about 555 ships in 2022, a number 4.68% higher than the previous year. Exports throughout the Terminal also grew almost 11% in the last year. For the president of Porto Itapoá, Cássio Schreiner, the numbers place the North-Catarinense Terminal among the Top 5 in Brazil. “We had a significant evolution in our indicators, mainly due to the effort and commitment of our team, and this is being recognized by the market.” Schreiner points out that an important aspect of this evolution was the transition or even migration of clients from various other port terminals to Itapoá.
Reefer is one of the operations that had a significant positive impact on refrigerated cargo. Cássio explains that the location of the Port is quite strategic in this sense: “Paraná and Santa Catarina are major producers of animal protein for export.” In 2022, exports through the Itapoá Port grew almost 41% compared to 2021. Reefer operations via cabotage also grew more than 50% in departures and 47% in arrivals of these loads. Currently, the Terminal has about 2,892 connections dedicated to refrigerated containers.
Cabotage is considered an important element in the growth of the Port, with over 57% increase from one year to another. “In 2022, we began operating with new shipping lines and consequently offering new routes for our clients,” analyzes Schreiner. Another type of transaction that saw a strong increase in demand was break bulk – when the cargo has dimensions larger than a container and must be loaded in a more specific manner. These operations grew more than 46% in 2022. “We made almost three operations per month, on average,” he comments. “Many of them were luxury boats and yachts, a niche in which we are currently quite strong.” There is now a specialized team in break bulk operations at the Itapoá Port.

The year 2022 also marked the record for truck movements at the Terminal, with about 386,535 Gate movements. This number is about 10% higher than that recorded in 2021. The busiest months are March (34,404 movements), July (34,842), and August (35,911). “We invested heavily in infrastructure, operational efficiency, and excellence in customer service, ensuring the differential of our operation,” explains Cássio.
Infrastructure
The expansion of the yard at the Itapoá Port was licensed by Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), Federal Revenue of Brazil, and Antaq (National Agency of Waterway Transportation) and is now cleared for operation. This involves a space of 50,000 square meters that will be added to the Terminal yard, bringing the total to 300,000 square meters. The new area has a static capacity of almost 7,000 containers. This yard expansion is still underway.
