Lula Meets with Tatiana Coelho de Sampaio from UFRJ to Discuss Research on Spinal Cord Injury Regeneration with Polylaminin and Regulatory Advances with Anvisa
According to the portal Congresso em Foco, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with biologist Tatiana Coelho de Sampaio from UFRJ to discuss research on spinal cord injury regeneration with polylaminin, a developing medication aimed at reconnecting spinal cord neurons and advancing with Anvisa.
Research on Spinal Cord Injury Regeneration with Polylaminin
The meeting was announced by Belo Horizonte councilor Pedro Roussef. Tatiana coordinates the Laboratory of Extracellular Matrix Biology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at UFRJ and leads studies on polylaminin, a protein developed to stimulate the reconnection of neurons.
In a video, the scientist explained the process of research on spinal cord injury regeneration with polylaminin.

According to her, the natural protein was modified to become a medication capable of recovering injured neurons and promoting the growth of “wiring,” reconnecting interrupted structures.
Message to the Ministry of Health and Procedures with Anvisa
According to the article from Congresso em Foco, during the meeting, Lula, in a good-humored tone, encouraged the biologist to send a message to the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha.
Tatiana replied, stating that there is a new medication to treat people with paralysis.
She stated that the team is responding to all of Anvisa’s requirements, but it is necessary to advance to make the treatment a reality.
The research on spinal cord injury regeneration with polylaminin is still undergoing regulatory processing.
Polylaminin: Debate on Women’s Visibility in Science
The researcher’s name gained prominence in recent weeks after a statement by the president of the Independent League of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel David.
He stated that no woman would be as relevant media-wise as the influencer and queen of the Grande Rio drum squad, Virgínia.
The remark generated a debate on social media and sparked searches for female references in science. Internet users began to promote greater recognition for scientists, including in the context of Carnival.
Political Context and Public Repercussions
The announcement of the meeting occurred in this context of public debate. Lula was honored at this year’s Carnival in Rio and faced criticism from the opposition and social media users for attending the parade in person at Sapucaí on Sunday (15).
In this context, the meeting on spinal cord injury regeneration with polylaminin also became part of the public discussion, increasing the visibility of the research conducted at UFRJ.
