The Contingency Announced by the Federal Government in the Armed Forces Affected the Navy More, Which Has Important Projects Like the Construction of the Corvettes in Itajaí (SC) and Submarines in Itaguaí (RJ)
The Director of Projects of the Brazilian Navy, Vice Admiral Petronio Augusto Siqueira de Aguiar, assured on the morning of this Thursday (05/16) that the budget contingency announced by the federal government will not affect the progress of the project for the construction of four Navy ships in Itajaí.
The director’s statement to Santa Catarina entrepreneurs, during the meeting of the Defense Industry Committee (Comdefesa) of Fiesc, was necessary after the government announced a 44% budget contingency for the armed forces, which also impacts projects of the FAB and the Army.
Navy More Impacted
He also confirmed that the funds that would be used for the construction of the Corvettes in Itajaí, around R$ 2.5 billion, are contingent, but he believes this will be reversed in the second semester due to the extreme need for modernization of the fleet by the Brazilian Navy.
The other Brazilian ships of the class (Corvettes) have 36 years of use, while the global average is 30 years.

Engepron, the company that manages the Navy’s projects, was greatly impacted, as it had 100% of its resources contingent, but of the R$ 13.1 billion which is the total budget for this year for the Armed Forces, 56% have been blocked, or R$ 5.8 billion.
Engepron will also be left without part of the budget for the construction of the PROSUB submarines, which are being built at the ICN shipyard in Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro.
The deadline for signing the contract between Engepron and the “Blue Waters” Consortium, declared winner in April of the Navy’s tender, remains next December.
The federal government claims that the contingency is not a cut and that the funds will be replenished next year with the approval of the pension reform and the consequent economic recovery and adequate return of revenue levels.
