Platform gathers free language courses, digital library, and online study resources in a single MEC ecosystem, with access through gov.br account, online book lending, and support tools for those seeking to learn autonomously.

With free access through the gov.br account, the Ministry of Education has started offering digital tools for language study and reading, bringing together English and Spanish courses in MEC Idiomas and online book lending in MEC Livros.

The initiative expands the online educational services of the department and mainly targets public school students, teachers, and Brazilians who seek to study autonomously, with digital resources organized for use in different learning routines.

In the language courses, the proposal is to allow the user to progress from basic to advanced level through short classes, tests, exercises, and support tools, without necessarily relying on in-person supervision.

Initially launched with about 8,000 national and foreign works, MEC Livros had its collection expanded by the department itself to approximately 25,000 titles, with new works and adjustments in the digital lending model.

Free English and Spanish courses in MEC Idiomas

Organized into six learning levels, MEC Idiomas offers about 800 English and Spanish classes, with progressive modules that help the student track their own performance and advance as they complete each planned stage.

The course structure combines classes, content reinforcement, exercises, and tests at the end of the modules, as well as proficiency tests, learning paths, speaking activities, and gamification resources within the digital environment.

According to information released by MEC, the tool was created as a bilingual self-instructional platform, allowing the student to organize their study routine at home, at school, or in other spaces with internet access.

Artificial intelligence and online conversation

Among the resources planned in MEC Idiomas, artificial intelligence agents appear as support to clarify doubts, reinforce content, and assist in conversation practice, within the proposal to make learning more interactive.

The “speak and practice” feature is also planned, aimed at pronunciation and communication training, with activities that bring the student closer to real-life language use situations during the learning process.

For those who do not have frequent access to in-person classes or conversation groups, the tool can serve as a study supplement, especially by combining oral practice, content review, and digital tracking on the same platform.

In addition to the initial English and Spanish classes, the MEC reported that other languages may be incorporated in the coming years, while public calls should allow the submission of content already produced by educational networks.

MEC Livros releases free digital library

Aimed at free reading over the internet, MEC Livros functions as a public digital library, allowing users to consult works, borrow titles digitally, and read on a computer, cell phone, or tablet after authentication via the gov.br account.

In the model released by the ministry, each book is available for 14 days, with the possibility of renewal for the same period if the work remains available and there is no impediment in the digital circulation system.

The collection includes national and international titles, including classics, contemporary works, and publications of different genres, such as biography, poetry, children’s literature, history, science fiction, comics, and other formats aimed at diverse audiences.

To enhance the reading experience, the platform includes font customization, contrast adjustment, support for people with dyslexia, compatibility with screen readers, bookmarks, notes, and tracking of accessed works.

MEC Livros collection has been expanded

The main update compared to the initial announcement is the size of the digital library, as the service was introduced with almost 8,000 works and later expanded to include about 25,000 titles.

With the expansion, users who have read at least 10% of a work can also make an early return and borrow a new title, a rule that also applies to those with an expired deadline.

Similar to the operation of physical libraries, the system maintains temporary loans and limited availability of digital copies in some cases, which may lead the user to enter a waiting list for certain titles.

When all digital copies are borrowed, access to the work depends on its return by another reader, maintaining the logic of controlled circulation within the public reading platform.

Digital tools are added to MEC Enem

The new platforms join the same movement of digitalizing educational services by MEC, which already maintains MEC Enem as a free tool for preparing for the National High School Exam.

In preparation for the Enem, the department offers mock exams, reinforcement materials, a virtual assistant with artificial intelligence, and automated essay correction, expanding the use of digital resources at different stages of education.

With distinct functions, MEC Idiomas, MEC Livros, and MEC Enem form a set of free services aimed at language learning, access to literary reading, and support for entering higher education.

How to enroll in MEC Idiomas and MEC Livros

To access MEC Idiomas, the user must enter the service’s official platform and log in with the gov.br account, a necessary step to choose the available language and start the learning path.

After authentication, it is possible to take the proficiency test, check the level indicated by the system, and follow the corresponding modules, using classes, exercises, and support resources as you progress on the platform.

In MEC Livros, access also occurs through the gov.br account, with a search in the collection, selection of the available work, and free digital loan for a period of 14 days, renewable for another two weeks according to the service rules.
