Renewable Energy Companies Suffer Billion-Dollar Losses, Leaving Abandoned Parks And The Country Deep In Debt!

The largest wind energy companies operating in the Northeast of Brazil are facing one of the biggest crises in the sector, accumulating a loss of R$ 1.4 billion. This financial blow has directly impacted operations and led several companies to suspend billion-dollar investments in new projects in the country. This situation worries both the market and the communities that lack advancement in renewable energy in the region, according to estadodeminas.

Generation Cuts And Stalemate With The Government

The central problem is linked to technical restrictions and regulations in the electricity sector, which are limiting the transmission of energy produced by the wind farms in the Northeast. Delays in transmission lines and substations reduce companies’ ability to deliver the generated energy, especially in states like Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. In addition to losing revenues, companies need to purchase energy from thermal plants – which are more expensive and less sustainable – to meet their contracts.

Companies such as CPFL, EDP, Engie, and Voltalia have already reported significant losses. CPFL, for example, accounts for losses of R$ 200 million just in 2024, while EDP has experienced cuts of up to 30% in generation, resulting in losses of R$ 3 million per week. Voltalia saw about 80% of its installed capacity cut, accumulating losses of R$ 111.2 million from January to September this year.

Pressure On Companies And Risk Of Default

In light of this situation, companies are warning of the risk of a cascade crisis, which could affect everything from paying debts to banks to maintaining operations and rentals of land where the wind farms are installed. Industry executives openly discuss the impact of this crisis on the replacement of the renewable energy sector in Brazil, which has always been viewed as exemplary.

Robert Klein, president of Voltalia for Latin America, described the situation as “the most critical we have ever experienced in the sector.” He emphasizes that many companies are out of cash, compromising future investments. “We have projects totaling R$ 5 billion ready to go, but as it stands, it is impossible to move forward,” Klein states.

With the lack of a quick solution from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), companies in the sector have decided to take the case to court. They argued that the agency should consider the issues as external factors, relieving the companies of losses and passing on the costs to the electricity bill. However, ANEEL has resisted this idea, which maintains the impasse.

Meanwhile, the National Electric System Operator (ONS) states that the restrictions are permitted to ensure the safety of the electric system since equipment failures can cause voltage fluctuations. However, industry leaders, such as Elbia Gannoum, president of the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (Abeeólica), argue that the situation is “absurd and paradoxical,” as while there is an excess of energy generation in the Northeast, the Southeast is using more polluting and costly thermal plants.

The crisis in the wind sector is a challenge for the future of renewable energy investments in Brazil. Companies hope that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible so that they can resume their expansion plans and contribute to the growth of a cleaner and more sustainable energy system in the country.
