Instant Amazon Porridge Uses Pacovan Banana, Cassava, and Brazil Nut to Unite Tradition, Practicality, and Income Generation.
In the Amazon, an instant Amazon porridge prepared in just one minute is changing the way a traditional food reaches consumers. Created by Vanilson Costa, a former military man who moved from Goiás to the North region at 22 years old, the instant porridge was born to unite practicality, regional identity, and income generation.
Made with pacovan banana, Brazil nut, and cassava derivatives, the product already reaches fairs, schools, and new markets, with a monthly revenue of R$ 45 thousand.

Instant Amazon Porridge Maintains Flavor and Identity
The proposal of the instant Amazon porridge is simple and strategic. The food preserves traditional ingredients from the Amazon but reaches the consumer in a cup similar to instant noodles. Just add hot water and wait one minute to consume.
According to Vanilson, the innovation arose from a daily observation.
I looked at the noodles, I looked at the cup and said, I can’t believe I didn’t think of this… let’s combine. What if?, recalls the entrepreneur.
From this idea, he structured a totally natural instant porridge, without the addition of sugar, sodium, or preservatives.
The focus has always been to value regional raw materials and respect Amazonian food culture.
Productive Chains from the Amazon Drive the Project

The growth of the Amazon porridge was only possible thanks to the strengthening of three already established productive chains: banana, nuts, and cassava.
These ingredients form the base of the product and connect family farmers to the new market.
One of the suppliers is Klebson Dantas, responsible for the tapioca flour used in the recipe. He reports that the expansion of demand encouraged small producers to enlarge their cultivation areas.
One farmer summarizes the local economic impact:
It grew from 4 hectares to over a hundred. I feel happy because I know there is someone to sell to… I can support my family on the farm.
For Klebson, the effect goes beyond revenue.
We feel blessed when we know that our product, our work, is making other people grow as well.
University Incubation and Rapid Market Acceptance
The instant porridge was incubated at the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas, where it went through technical adjustments and business model validation.
The project also attracted investors, which accelerated the structuring of production.
Public acceptance occurred quickly, especially after participation in regional fairs. Practicality became a central selling point.
Prepare in one minute. How is that one minute?, Vanilson provokes while explaining the concept.
Today, the factory under construction has an estimated capacity of up to 10,000 cups per day. Additionally, there is a project focused on school lunch, with a planned delivery of up to 30,000 kilograms of porridge per week.
Nutrition, Food Sovereignty, and Social Impact
Nutritionist Adria Monteiro, a riverside resident and part of the recipe development team, highlights the nutritional value of the Amazon porridge.
I know it is a product that can help many people, not just in terms of nutrition, but also when you buy from a riverside dweller who plants that fruit in hopes of selling it to someone.
She emphasizes that the dehydration process preserves nutrients and dispenses with additives. “It has no added sugar, it has no added preservatives, and it has no added sodium.”
For Adria, the food represents more than convenience. “The porridge is food sovereignty.”
Tradition of the Amazon Porridge Remains Alive
Despite the innovation, the instant porridge does not intend to replace the artisanal preparation. In Manaus, seller Eliezo Mendes keeps alive a family tradition of 66 years with the traditional recipe.
He has been working with porridge since he was 15 years old and, on Sundays, sells around a thousand cups with the help of 21 employees.
I love working with porridge. I love to have porridge, he states.
Customers reinforce the emotional bond.
It’s a relationship of love because I have been having this porridge for over 50 years.
Vanilson emphasizes this coexistence between innovation and tradition.
We are not competitors; we just want to create opportunities, more opportunities.
According to him, the traditional porridge “will always exist and must exist.”
Consumers Approve the Instant Porridge
The quality of the instant Amazon porridge also wins over those who try it. Customer Josilene Monteiro was surprised by the fidelity to the original flavor.
What enchanted me is the quality of the porridge, which is very, very similar to the traditional one.
Nephew Arthur became an immediate fan: “Auntie, it’s wonderful; I want to have it all the time.”
For those involved in the production chain, the meaning is even greater. “Life, livelihood, history, traditions… Porridge is life,” summarizes Klebson.
Vanilson concludes with the project’s purpose: “The porridge, for me, today is my commitment to the Amazon.”
