The Vessel ‘Papa Francisco’ Built by the Inace Shipyard, a Bold Project for Charity, Set Sail This Friday, the 7th, for Its Destination, the Riversider Population of the Amazon
A vessel built in Ceará will serve as a means to bring health services and medical assistance to more isolated places, accessible by river routes in the Amazon region. The Hospital Ship Papa Francisco was built by the Inace Naval Shipyard and departed from Iracema Beach, Fortaleza, heading to Belém, Pará.
The hospital vessel was commissioned by the Fraternity of Saint Francis of Assisi in the Providence of God, which conceived the project when Pope Francis visited a hospital in Rio de Janeiro during the World Youth Day in 2013.

The Pope made a request to Friar Francisco, the founder of the association, to pay attention and provide assistance to those who had no way to reach a hospital.
“We realized that for the population living on the riverbanks who found it difficult to reach hospitals, the only way was for the hospital to go to them,” he said.
The vessel has 10 permanent crew members and 20 volunteers, who will embark on missions that will last ten days, after which they will return to the base located in the city of Óbidos, Pará.
The expectation is that the vessel will serve over a thousand riverside communities.
The construction of the boat, which measures 32 meters in length, began in January 2018
The Hospital Ship has medical and dental offices, an operating room, a fully equipped ophthalmological room, a laboratory for analyses, a medication room, a vaccination room, and infirmary beds, as well as equipment for examinations such as X-ray, ultrasound, echocardiogram, mammogram, treadmill, and electro.
Preventive work and early diagnosis of cancer will also be carried out through the conducting of tests.
According to the company’s director, Flávia Barros, it was a great challenge. “I believe that this end made the challenge more enjoyable, precisely knowing that it was for a noble and challenging work,” she said.
