Start of Drilling at the Pitu Oeste Well in the Equatorial Margin in Deep Waters. Economic Viability and Energy Security in Focus.
Petrobras’ drill ship arrived in the state of Rio Grande do Norte this Sunday (17) to begin drilling the Pitu Oeste well in the Equatorial Margin. Coming from Rio de Janeiro, the vessel departed on December 6 and will start operating this month in the BM-POT-17 concession. The licensing for exploratory deep-water well drilling in the Potiguar Basin was granted by IBAMA in October 2023.
The first well to be drilled will be located 52 km from the coast. With the exploratory research, Petrobras aims to gather more geological information about the area to assess the economic viability and extent of the oil discovery made in 2013 at the Pitu well. There is no oil production at this stage. The company plans to invest US$ 3.1 billion in exploratory activities in the Equatorial Margin, according to the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan. Additionally, the Anhangá well, in the POT-M-762 concession, is also on Petrobras’ drilling plans, 79 km from the coast of Rio Grande do Norte and near the Pitu Oeste well.
Strategic Plan for Well Drilling in the Equatorial Margin
The state of Pará, located in the Equatorial Margin, has been granted the BM-POT-17 concession for exploratory well drilling activities in deep waters. The economic viability of this drilling has the potential to boost the oil discovery in the region, contributing to the country’s energy security.

Petrobras completes 1,300 hours of work and 15 km of subsea lines to connect the Búzios 90 well to the P-79 — the platform is ready to produce 180,000 barrels per day and is just awaiting ANP approval.
POT-M-762 Concession and Environmental License for Well Drilling
The POT-M-762 concession also paves the way for exploratory well drilling, with all environmental licenses already secured. The drill contracted to carry out these activities will be essential for advancing drilling operations in the region.
Development of Technologies for Well Drilling in the Equatorial Margin
The need for improvement in drilling technologies is essential for the success of operations in the Equatorial Margin. Innovation in this field can increase operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the chances of significant oil discoveries.
Investment in Research and Development for Deep Water Drilling
The government has strongly encouraged investment in research and development of deep-water drilling technologies. This is crucial to maximize the results of drilling operations in the Equatorial Margin, ensuring a safe and efficient approach.
Importance of Drilling in the Equatorial Margin for the National Economy
Exploratory well drilling in the Equatorial Margin not only boosts the local economy but also significantly contributes to the national economy as a whole. The oil discovered in these operations has the potential to positively impact the energy market, generate jobs, and drive growth in the sector.
Advances in Well Drilling and the Country’s Energy Security
The successful completion of drilling activities in the Equatorial Margin is crucial to ensure Brazil’s energy security. The discovery and production of oil in this region will contribute to diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on imports.
Regulations and Standards for Well Drilling in the Equatorial Margin
It is essential that all drilling operations in the Equatorial Margin comply with environmental regulations and standards. Sustainable practices and attention to safety must be priorities throughout the exploratory well drilling process.
Strategic Partnerships for the Development of Drilling in the Equatorial Margin
Establishing strategic partnerships with companies specialized in well drilling is crucial for the success of operations in the Equatorial Margin. The exchange of knowledge and expertise in this field will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of drilling activities.
