New Fortress Energy Inaugurates South Gas Terminal in SC with Investment of R$500M Directed to Natural Gas Supply, Job Creation, and Income in the Region.
The inauguration of the South Gas Terminal marked a new milestone for the southern region of Brazil. Located in Santa Catarina, the project by New Fortress Energy (NFE) Brazil represented a significant investment of R$ 500 million. The inauguration of the South Gas Terminal generated great expectations in the region and promises to boost the local economy.
The new gas terminal represents a strategic advancement for the energy sector in Brazil. The liquefied natural gas regasification facility brings with it the promise of diversifying the country’s energy matrix. The inauguration of the gas terminal is an important step towards sustainability and regional economic development, opening doors for new job and income opportunities.
Expansion of the First South Gas Terminal in the Southern Region of Brazil
Located just 46km from the city of Joinville and approximately 180km from the capital Florianópolis, the South Gas Terminal is a project of great relevance for the region. With an investment of R$ 500 million, it has become the first liquefied natural gas regasification facility in the southern region and the eighth in operation in the country.

The South Gas Terminal already has a contract with TBG (Brazilian Transporter Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline) for the supply of natural gas, enabling its use as a supply option for thermoelectric plants in the South, Southeast, and Midwest regions. Additionally, the project will support the growth of industries such as ceramics, metalworking, and glass, distributing natural gas to consumers later.
According to Leandro Cunha, General Director of NFE Brazil, the South Gas Terminal is essential for ensuring gas supply security, as well as diversification in the supply for consumers. Furthermore, the Terminal will significantly contribute to meeting the potential demand from new industries in the region, resulting in job creation and income for the local population.
The connection of the TGS with the Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline represents a strategic opportunity to expand the supply of natural gas to the South, Southeast, and Midwest regions, addressing existing industrial demand and promising prospects for increased demand, thus ensuring the country’s energy security. As stated by NFE Brazil’s General Director, Leandro, this interconnection is extremely important for the economic and energy development of the region.
The South Gas Terminal connects to a region that faces natural gas supply constraints and has over 3.5 GW of existing plants that require firm gas supply or long-term contracts (PPAs). The Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) Winter, measuring 277 meters in length, is the gas processing unit responsible for operating at the TGS.
The FSRU Winter has the capacity to store 138,000 m³ of LNG, equivalent to 83 million m³ of natural gas, and can regasify up to 15 million m³ per day. The vessel, sub-leased from Petrobras, has 35 crew members from six different countries on board. Starting in September 2024, the chartering will be done directly through ENERGOS, the shipowner and owner of the FSRU.
The South Gas Terminal by NFE in Brazil represents the company’s second project in the country. With an investment of R$ 300 million, the inauguration of the LNG import terminal in the Bay of Marajó, in Barcarena (PA), took place in February. This terminal will serve two thermoelectric plants fueled by natural gas, currently under construction by NFE, with estimated investments of R$ 7.0 billion and the first phase expected to open in 2025.
The operation of FSRU-type vessels is globally recognized as one of the safest for the environment and for nearby communities. With the growing concern over climate change, natural gas emerges as the ideal source for a transition towards a low-carbon market, as highlighted by experts.
