New Brazilian Trend: Alcohol-Free Beer Surges in Brazil with a 536% Increase, Sector Yearbook Reveals

National Production Reaches 15.3 Billion Liters, with Historic Growth of Beer 0.0% and Leadership Maintained by São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul

Brazil ended 2024 with 1,949 registered breweries, according to the 2025 Beer Yearbook, recently released. The number leaves the country close to the symbolic mark of 2,000 establishments. However, the growth was modest: 102 new breweries compared to the 1,847 registered in the previous report, an increase of only 5.5%.

The total volume produced during the period reached 15.3 billion liters. The Southeast region leads, accounting for 55% of this production, equivalent to 8.4 billion liters. Within this total, 3.8 billion, or 24.7%, are classified as all-malt beer.

Zero Alcohol Gains Strength

The highlight of 2024 was the advancement of non-alcoholic beers. The country produced 757 million liters in this category, which by law includes drinks with up to 0.5% alcohol content.

The mark represents 4.9% of national production and a jump of 536.9% compared to 2023, when 118.9 million liters were registered.

Slower Growth

Since 2016, when Brazil began a sequence of more than a hundred new breweries per year, the progress has never been so low.

Even during the years of economic contraction due to the pandemic, the pace was higher. In 2020, 174 breweries emerged; in 2021, 166; and in 2023, 118, with an increase of 6.8%.

Despite this, Sindicerv adopted an optimistic tone. “The Brazilian beer sector continued to show its strength in 2024. There are 1,949 breweries in 790 municipalities,” it published on Instagram.

The entity also highlighted overcoming obstacles such as floods in Rio Grande do Sul and difficulties in the global economy.

States in Highlight

São Paulo maintains national leadership, with 427 breweries. Rio Grande do Sul is second, with 349.

Santa Catarina has regained third position, lost two years ago to Minas Gerais, and now has 260 establishments compared to 248 in Minas Gerais.

On the other hand, the yearbook, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), shows that 111 registrations were canceled in 2024.

Rio Grande do Sul led the closures, with 32, followed by São Paulo (19) and Santa Catarina (11).

Differentiated Production

The report also revealed curious data about styles and ingredients used. There were 8.5 million liters declared with herbs or spices, 5.8 million with fruits, and 3.3 million with honey.

There were also 306.1 thousand liters with coffee, 114.2 thousand with pepper, 109.4 thousand with chocolate, and 22.3 thousand with pumpkin.

Another relevant data point is the production of gluten-free beers, which reached 71 million liters.

With these numbers, the sector maintains its economic and cultural relevance in the country, even in the face of slower growth and challenges faced in 2024.
