With a Strong Investment of R$ 350 Million, Appian Capital Brazil Starts Operating a Graphite Mine in Brazil, Aiming to Meet the Growing Demand for Electric Vehicle Batteries.
As reported by PetroNotícias on Tuesday (04/06), Appian Capital Brazil is massively investing in the establishment of a graphite operation in Brazil. This robust investment of R$ 350 million is being directed to the Boa Sorte mine, located in the União Baiana district of Itagimirim, Bahia. With this initiative, the company aims to strengthen its position in the mining sector and meet the growing demand for essential materials in the production of electric vehicles batteries.
Creation of Graphcoa and Start of Construction of Beneficiation Plant
At the end of 2022, Appian Capital Advisory LLP consolidated a joint venture with the creation of Graphcoa, a company aimed at exploring and developing promising graphite deposits in Brazil.
Graphcoa already has projects underway in Southern Bahia and Northern Minas Gerais.

The construction of a demonstration plant for graphite beneficiation is a crucial step in this process.
The demonstration plant will have an initial production capacity of 5,500 tons per year of graphite, with the expectation that this number can be significantly increased.
Appian Capital Brazil anticipates that, with the full development of the project, production could reach up to 25,500 tons per year.
This increase in capacity will depend on the results of the feasibility studies to be completed in 2025.
Graphite: An Essential Mineral for the Future
Graphite is a vital component in the production of battery anodes, especially those used in electric vehicles.
The demand for high-efficiency batteries is growing exponentially, driven by the global energy transition and the increase in transport electrification.
According to Paulo Castellari, CEO of Appian Capital Brazil, “This is a significant milestone for the Appian Group.
Alongside the current copper and nickel sulfide assets in our portfolio, this new critical mineral will expand the Group’s operations in the strategic metals sector.”
“Spherical graphite, the final product produced from the graphite that will be mined in our projects, represents 95% of the anodes of electric vehicle batteries.”
This means that Graphcoa’s production could supply a significant portion of the global demand for high-quality graphite, essential for the production of efficient and long-lasting batteries.
Economic and Social Benefits of the New Graphite Mine
In addition to strengthening the mining sector, the establishment of the graphite mine will bring significant economic and social benefits to the region.
The construction of the demonstration plant is expected to generate approximately 300 direct jobs at the peak of the construction.
These jobs are crucial for local economic development, providing new opportunities and boosting the regional economy.
Potential for Expansion and Future Production in Brazil
The initial production of graphite concentrate is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, when it will undergo quality assessment by strategic customers.
From this analysis, Graphcoa will be able to adjust and optimize its processes to ensure maximum efficiency and quality of the final product.
If feasibility studies confirm the viability of expansion, investments in the graphite mine could reach up to R$ 1.5 billion.
With about 26% of the world’s graphite reserves, Brazil is strategically positioned to become a key player in the global battery market.
The Boa Sorte mine, along with other Graphcoa projects, could place Brazil at the forefront of the energy transition, supplying the global demand for electric vehicle batteries.
