China has begun construction on what is set to become the world’s largest river lock on the Yangtze River, a megaproject costing 77.2 billion yuan that aims to more than double the cargo transport capacity at the Three Gorges Dam.
The crossing will feature two traffic lanes of 3.6 meters each, two three-meter shoulders, New Jersey-type safety barriers, two sidewalks for pedestrians, and guardrails at each end of the deck.

Progress Of The Work
The initial phase is already underway, with the mechanized removal of the debris from the old Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge.
The teams have begun mechanized excavations for the implementation of the foundations of the supports on the Estreito municipality side.
Work is also ongoing for the installation of the construction site and the mobilization of equipment and personnel.
The foundation footings will be concreted on-site, and then the pillars will be erected. With these stages in progress, DNIT is following the established schedule, with a forecast for the delivery of the new bridge by the end of the year.
The Collapse Of The Old Bridge
The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge collapsed on December 22, 2024, causing a tragedy.
The structure, with a length of 533 meters, gave way around 2:50 PM, resulting in the fall of several vehicles, including trucks, cars, and motorcycles, into the Tocantins River.
Inaugurated in 1961, the bridge was an essential route connecting Maranhão and Tocantins, integrating BR-226 and BR-230 highways.
Prior to the collapse, reports indicated signs of wear in the structure, and there were plans for its renovation that were not realized in time.
