The Government of Pernambuco Expects That, With the Construction of the Solar Plant, 700 Direct and Indirect Jobs Will Be Created, and That Energy Costs Will Be Reduced by Up to R$ 1.1 Billion

This Monday (the 18th), the government of Pernambuco signed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract with the Pernambuco Consortium, which consists of the companies Kroma Energia and Elétron Energy. The contract provides for the implementation of a solar plant in two municipalities in the state of Pernambuco, with a production capacity of 135 MW. The project’s goal is to ensure energy self-production by Compesa.

The state government expects that up to 700 direct and indirect jobs will be generated thanks to the initiative.

It is worth noting that last year, Compesa was responsible for 4% of all energy generated in the state of Pernambuco, making it one of the largest consumers in the state. Thus, with the new project, the company will also become one of the largest energy producers in the state.

The PPP determines that part of the solar plant will be installed in the municipality of Flores, in the Sertão, and another in São Caetano, in the Agreste. The total investment dedicated to the initiative will be R$ 453 million, while the contract duration is 29 years.

During the first four years of the concession, the supply will be made through the free energy market, as in this environment, the input is generally cheaper. Starting in 2026, however, it is expected that Compesa will have a solar plant available with a generation capacity of 135 MW ac. While the contract is in effect, the total savings will be R$ 1.1 billion.

Governor of Pernambuco Advocates for the Construction of the Plant to Improve Compesa’s Operational Conditions

According to the Governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, the action will help reduce costs for Compesa, in addition to providing better operational conditions for the company. Câmara also states that the creation of the solar plant in Flores and São Caetano is part of a series of initiatives the State Government has been developing for environmental protection and commitment to good sustainability practices.

The Compesa Solar Energy System will enable the annual generation of 320 GWh/year, which is equivalent to the consumption of 175,000 medium-sized households. Furthermore, the use of clean energy, derived from sources that cause less environmental impact, will prevent the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the main greenhouse gases.

With the new solar plant, the expectation is to generate savings of 37% compared to the amount paid to the utility company. In this regard, the president of Compesa, Manoela Marinho, stated that in addition to supplying the institution’s facilities, this energy will also directly benefit the population. This is because, with the reduction of operational costs, it will be possible to invest in the improvement of services offered.

About Compesa

Compesa was founded in 1971, with the aim of providing water and sewage services to the people of Pernambuco. Since then, the company has undergone intense expansion, currently operating in almost all 184 municipalities of the state, plus the district of Fernando de Noronha.

It is a mixed-capital public utility company, whose purposes are of public utility. The company is linked to the Government of the State of Pernambuco through the Department of Infrastructure and Water Resources, and it considers this government as its largest shareholder.
