The Coamo Agroindustrial Cooperative, the largest agricultural cooperative in Latin America, announced its plans for the construction of a new port in SC, precisely in Itapoá, during the “Best of Agribusiness 2024” award ceremony hosted by Globo Rural. The initiative reflects the cooperative’s strategy to expand its port infrastructure and meet the growing demand for exports.

According to José Aroldo Gallassini, chairman of Coamo’s board, the investment is urgent. “We will invest there because we have a very high demand for ports. Last year, we exported through six ports, that’s why we will invest,” Gallassini stated during the event. The construction of the port in Itapoá is in the environmental licensing phase and is considered a milestone in the planning of the cooperative.

Structure and Impact of the New Port in SC

New port in SC will be built in Itapoá, a strategic region near Porto Itapoá, connecting 115 receiving units of Coamo in three states of Brazil.

The designed maritime terminal will have four berths, with 450 meters facing the sea and a draft of 18.5 meters. The infrastructure will be aimed at operations with grains, fertilizers, liquid fuels, and LPG, handling up to 10 million tons per year when fully operational. The adopted model will be a Private Use Terminal (TUP), reinforcing the strategic nature of the port construction in Itapoá.

Advances in the Licensing Process

The preliminary environmental license request was submitted to the Environment Institute (IMA) in June and is currently under review. The cooperative is awaiting approval to advance to the next stage, which involves presenting the environmental impact study. With a global revenue of R$ 30.3 billion in 2023, Coamo reinforces its prominence in the sector with long-term investments such as the new port in SC.

This initiative consolidates Coamo’s leadership in agribusiness and demonstrates its commitment to sustainable and strategic development, positioning the new port in SC as a key element to boost competitiveness in Brazilian exports.
