The world's LARGEST land vehicle A 300-foot excavator that costs €92 million and makes mining history
The Bagger 288 is designed to remove the layer of earth covering coal in giant mines. It can excavate tons of material per day, helping to access the coal used for fuel.

At 13.500 tons, 220 meters long and with a bucket wheel the size of a seven-story building, the world's largest land vehicle can excavate the equivalent of a football field a day and fill 2.400 coal cars.

A vehicle so big it dwarfs the Statue of Liberty? That’s exactly what the Bagger 288 represents. Designed to revolutionize the mining industry, it’s more than just a machine; it’s a true monument to modern engineering. At 300 feet tall and weighing more than the Eiffel Tower, it holds the title of the world’s largest land vehicle.

But what makes the Bagger 288 so special? From its ability to dig the equivalent of a football field in a day to the impressive details of its construction, everything about it is superlative. Let's dive into the details of this colossus.

Construction and design of the world's largest land vehicle: Bagger 288

It is so efficient that it replaces the work of several smaller machines. With its giant wheel, it cuts, loads and transports the earth continuously, speeding up the entire mining process.
It is so efficient that it replaces the work of several smaller machines. With its giant wheel, it cuts, loads and transports the earth continuously, speeding up the entire mining process.

The story of the Bagger 288 begins in the 1970s, when German company Krupp was tasked with creating a machine to meet the needs of surface mining. It took five years of planning and another five years to build, culminating in 1978 at a cost of £80 million. It is no exaggeration to say that every detail was designed for efficiency and durability.

The world's largest land vehicle is 220 meters long and almost 96 meters high, figures that put it in a league of its own. Weighing 13.500 tons, it moves at a speed of just 643,74 meters per hour — meaning it's in no hurry, but it doesn't need to be either. Its bucket wheel, the size of a seven-story building, is the heart of the operation.

How the Bagger 288 works

The world's largest land vehicle is designed to remove overburden, the topsoil covering coal. With a daily excavation capacity of 240.000 tons, the Bagger 288 is the definition of efficiency. Just to give you an idea, the amount of coal mined in one day is enough to fill 2.400 wagons.

Despite its colossal size, the machine requires just five operators to operate. Its design incorporates cutting-edge technologies, such as steel suspension cables stretching over 7.200 feet and a conveyor system that moves 8,5 million cubic feet of earth per day.

Impact and curiosities of the Bagger 288

In addition to being the world's largest land vehicle, the Bagger 288 impresses with details such as the 90.000 pounds of paint covering its structure. It is so large that it has bathrooms and kitchens on board, something you would expect more from a ship than a land machine.

The Bagger 288 is not alone. He is part of a family of giant machines such as the Bagger 281 and Bagger 293. However, no other vehicle combines size, efficiency and impact like it.
