Petrobras Has Started Drilling a New Oil Well in the Aram Block in the Pre-Salt Layer of the Santos Basin. The Drilling Is Part of the Company’s Exploratory Plan to Expand Its Reserves.
Petrobras has started drilling another oil well in the Aram block, located in the Santos Basin, strengthening its strategy to expand reserves in the Brazilian pre-salt. The new well, identified as 3-BRSA-1399-SPS, is being drilled at a depth of 1,866 meters, with the support of the drillship Valaris DS-4. The area has shown promising results and has already seen two recent discoveries of light oil.
Pre-Salt Remains a Priority for Petrobras
Petrobras’s activity in the Aram block shows that the pre-salt continues to be one of the company’s strategic pillars.
The company leads the consortium for the block with an 80% stake, having CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporation) as a partner, holding the remaining 20%.

The contract is governed by the production sharing model, under the supervision of Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA).
The area was auctioned off during the 6th bidding round by the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) in March 2020, and has since attracted significant investments in exploration and evaluation.
Discoveries Reinforce the Potential of the Aram Block
The new well is part of the Discovery Evaluation Plan (PAD) for Aram, which also includes drilling an additional well and conducting formation tests.
The current drilling occurs just days after Petrobras confirmed the presence of oil in another well in the same area, the 3-BRSA-1396D-SPS.
With two discoveries recorded in succession, Aram stands out among the most promising assets of the state-owned company.
Petrobras’s president, Magda Chambriard, commented on the recent results and the company’s commitment to expanding its oil reserves:
“This is the second discovery in the same block, following the excellent result already achieved in another exploratory well at the beginning of the year, where we found oil of excellent quality. We are heavily investing in the search for new reserves, and the results are coming in. This year, we have also announced discoveries in Brava and in Búzios”, she stated.
With the recent discoveries in the Aram block, the consortium is now moving into a new phase: conducting laboratory analyses that will detail the characteristics of the reservoirs and the fluids found.
These data are essential for assessing the commercial potential of the oil and determining the next steps for the development of the area.
