Petrobras Discovery In The Region Equates To One-Third Of Current Brazilian Production And Investments In The Area And Gas Pipeline Construction Should Exceed R$ 2 Billion
Petrobras announced its largest discovery since the rich Pre-salt reserves were announced in 2006. The announcement refers to six fields in Sergipe and Alagoas.
The reserves are estimated at about 20 million m³ per day of natural gas, which represents about one-third of current Brazilian production.
The discovery places the states of Sergipe and Alagoas in the upper echelons of gas producers, as the cheapest gas in Brazil should soon come from these states.
According to the consulting firm Gas Energy, the six fields in the two states will generate R$ 7 billion in annual revenue for Petrobras and its partners.

The government celebrates the discovery as it will help fulfill its promise to reduce gas prices by 50%, benefiting the population and the industry, as the country enters a new phase of industrialization.
Petrobras’s investments in the project’s infrastructure and pipeline construction are expected to attract gas-importing companies and boost investments from the American ExxonMobil, which holds exploration projects in the region.
Northeast Development
The region’s economy has been severely affected by declining oil prices and the corruption scandals investigated by Operation Car Wash.
According to the president of Gas Energy, Rivaldo Moreira Neto, “It is possible that we will see a resurgence of the oil and gas industry in the Northeast, where it all started.”
ANP, through its director Felipe Kury, considered the potential of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin as “very promising” and believes in new discoveries in the near future.
Regarding the investments needed in the area, Petrobras is expected to spend US$ 2 billion this year on the construction of the pipeline to the coast and on delineating the area.
It is worth noting that these investments were already included in the business plan for the next five years (2019-2023).
