Natural Gas Supply Agreements Start This Friday (12/1), Extending Until 2034, Ensuring A Long-Term Partnership.

Petrobras’ strategy of engaging in long-term supply contracts with gas distributors since late 2022 resulted in securing 11 million m3/day of firm consumption for its natural gas as the decade turned.

The state-owned company had already signed 11 contracts with distributors, with a volume equivalent to about 14% of the total firm gas demand (excluding thermal power plants) forecasted by the Electric Energy Research Company (EPE) for the early 2030s, within the integrated pipeline network.

The parent company of CEG and CEG Rio managed to avoid disadvantageous conditions with Petrobras in court and was in a battle to renegotiate gas prices.

Although a settlement between the two companies had been attempted in court, the impasse had not been resolved by the announcement made on Friday. The amounts underpaid by the distributor in 2022, due to the court ruling, exceeded one billion reais at the beginning of the year, according to sources.

Multi-Million Contract Between Petrobras And Gas Distributors

Petrobras established a supply contract for natural gas totaling R$ 51.6 billion with CEG and CEG Rio, companies that distribute gas controlled by Naturgy and provide services in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The agreement takes effect today, December 1st, and will be valid until 2034.

According to the state company, the signing of the contract was made possible “due to the fulfillment of the conditions agreed upon by the parties, after concluding an agreement to end legal disputes”.
