Partnership Between Petrobras and SBM Offshore Should Become a Reference for Other Companies Aiming to Operate Allied to Sustainability.
SBM Offshore announced, last Monday (17), an important collaboration with Petrobras for the development of Carbon Capture Modules on FPSO platforms (Floating Production Storage and Offloading). The partnership aims to implement innovative technologies that can significantly contribute to the sustainability of the oil and gas sector, aligning with the decarbonization goals of the EmissionZERO program.
Innovation and Sustainability Side by Side
This study, focused on the application of solutions for the reduction of CO₂ emissions, will be based on a successful engineering project developed by SBM Offshore along with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI).
The carbon capture system will be adapted for Petrobras’ FPSOs, considering different turbine configurations, gas flow rates, and CO₂ concentrations.

Advances in FPSO Design for Emission Reduction
The study signed by SBM Offshore and Petrobras will involve the commercial evaluation and design of carbon capture systems for future FPSO units to be deployed in Petrobras fields.
Among the parameters to be analyzed are: the type of turbines and their configurations, the installed capacity of gas turbines, and the concentration of CO2 in the production gas. These factors will allow for optimizing the project’s efficiency and economic viability.
Olivier Icyk, Business Director at SBM Offshore, highlighted the importance of the study, stating:
“The signing of this study demonstrates Petrobras’ confidence in SBM Offshore as a pioneer in ocean infrastructure. We continue to work on decarbonization solutions in the design of our products and in our offshore operations. Through this study, we will be able to advance the design of the carbon capture module together with our partner MHI for the reduction of CO2 in future FPSOs.”
History of SBM Offshore in Brazil
SBM Offshore has a long history in Brazil, establishing itself as one of the main providers of solutions for the offshore market.
Present in the country since 1977, the company has excelled in the construction and operation of FPSO units, essential for the production of oil and gas in the Brazilian pre-salt.
SBM Offshore has been a strategic partner of major players in the sector, such as Petrobras, participating in important projects in the development of technology and infrastructure for the oil and gas industry.
Over the years, SBM Offshore has invested in innovation and sustainability, aligning its operations with environmental challenges and contributing to Brazil’s economic growth.
