New find in deep waters reinforces Petrobras’ strategy for reserve replenishment and continuity of exploration in the Brazilian pre-salt
A discovery of great relevance for the energy sector was announced by Petrobras this Monday, April 13, 2026.
The company confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin, after drilling an exploratory well in deep waters.
The find occurred in the C-M-477 block, in the SC-AP4 sector, expanding knowledge about the area and reinforcing the energy potential of the region.

The largest oil field in the United States had entire layers that no one knew existed, and the U.S. government has just confirmed 1.6 billion barrels hidden in rocks that have been invisible for decades.

Exploratory well reveals important signs on the seabed
The discovery was recorded in the well 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS, located about 201 kilometers off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Additionally, the operation took place at a depth of 2,984 meters of water, which shows the level of complexity of the activity.
The block is operated by Petrobras, which holds a 70% stake, in partnership with bp, which holds the remaining 30%.
Analyses will reveal the true potential of the discovery
After the identification of hydrocarbons, the collected samples will be sent for laboratory analyses.
These studies will allow for the characterization of the reservoirs and the fluids found, an essential step to understand the potential of the area.
Thus, the results will assist in the more accurate assessment of the feasibility of future exploration.
Petrobras’ strategy seeks to expand reserves
Petrobras’ operation in the C-M-477 block is part of a larger plan by the company.
In this sense, the focus is on replenishing oil and gas reserves, ensuring energy security for the country.
Furthermore, the company continues to advance in new exploration areas, considered strategic during the energy transition.
Block was acquired in ANP bidding round
The C-M-477 block was acquired during the 16th ANP Bidding Round.
The contract follows the concession regime, which defines the rules for participation and operation of the involved companies.
Discovery reinforces progress in the Brazilian pre-salt
The confirmation of the presence of hydrocarbons in the Campos Basin expands the prospects for the potential of the Brazilian pre-salt.
At the same time, the ongoing analyses will be decisive in understanding the true size of the discovery and its possibilities.
In light of this, the new discovery reinforces the advancement of exploration in the country and raises an inevitable curiosity — what else might still be hidden in the Brazilian seabed?
