In the midst of the pandemic, six platforms in five oil fields in the Campos Basin, in RJ, will be hibernated by Petrobras. The state-owned company informed oil workers’ unions through a note. In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 8, Petrobras emphasized that the current crisis in the oil industry is the worst in the last 100 years.

“The uncertainty is so great that we need to go further and take preventive measures to reduce expenditures and preserve our cash flow, in order to strengthen the financial stability and resilience of our business,” said the letter.

“These measures include halting some production units, postponing and reducing spending on personnel and dividends, among others.”

The above information comes from the document signed by the Sector Manager of Labor Relations, Marta Garcia.

The decision to hibernate the oil platforms in the Campos Basin, RJ, came after Petrobras informed a daily cut of 200 thousand barrels of its production and set a level of 2.07 million barrels per day (bpd) of pumping for April, compared to an average of 2.394 million bpd recorded in the last quarter of 2019.

In addition to the shallow water platforms, onshore fields are also being suspended, according to the state-owned company, each facility will have its own hibernation plan.

“Such platforms and fields operate with higher production costs. In the case of the platforms, due to the fall in oil prices, they have become cash flow negative,” Petrobras stated.

“Such planning includes, among other things, risk analysis and the necessary actions will be taken to preserve the safety of people, the environment, and the facilities. Some assets are undergoing divestment processes, and hibernation will not affect the continuity of this process.”

Marta Garcia emphasizes that employees of the halted facilities will have access to all alternatives provided for in the current personnel management plan for the portfolio: internal relocation according to the Company’s needs, Voluntary Dismissal Program (VDP), and dismissal by agreement.
