Petrobras And GA Drilling Join Forces To Develop Technology That Promises To Reduce Costs And Risks In Offshore Well Drilling With Lightweight Vessels.
The Petrobras is intensifying its efforts in innovation and technology in lightweight vessels for offshore well drilling with a new technical cooperation agreement with GA Drilling, a Slovak company specialized in deep drilling technology. This agreement also includes Petrobras’ Research and Development Center, known as Cenpes. The main objective of the partnership is to reshape underground drilling systems, aiming to reduce costs and risks associated with constructing wells in challenging conditions.
Advanced Petrobras Technology For Offshore Wells
GA Drilling promises to transform the traditional drilling approach by using a lightweight intervention vessel to drill deep and complex offshore wells.
Currently, the construction of these wells generally requires semi-submersible platforms or drill ships, which are more expensive and less agile. With the new technology, it is possible to reduce well construction costs by up to 30%.

A Chinese company has just delivered its 10,000th humanoid robot — and now wants to place 100,000 in factories worldwide by the end of the year, while Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and the rest of the West have yet to move beyond prototypes.

Brazil has never generated so much clean energy — and has never charged so much for it: while solar and wind farms break records, the electricity bill rises by up to 23% and R$ 52 billion in charges are paid by 35 million families who don’t understand why electricity has become so expensive.
Igor Kocis, CEO and co-founder of GA Drilling, highlighted that the collaboration with Petrobras and Cenpes will accelerate the development of technologies.
“Together, the benefits of our drilling technologies result in greater efficiency, leading to lower costs, a smaller operational footprint, and ultimately, lower overall risk,” Kocis said.
He also mentioned that the partnership will enable the use of Petrobras’ cutting-edge infrastructure and testing environments to advance technological development.
Autonomous Drilling System
The new system proposed by GA Drilling not only promises to reduce costs but also improve drilling efficiency.
The technology allows for the replacement of conventional drilling pipes with continuous pipes on a reel. This reduces the hazards associated with handling pipes, the tripping time (the process of moving pipes up and down), and the risks of well control.
Additionally, real-time wireline communication with the surface optimizes the drilling process at the bottom of the well, making it more efficient and safer.
The innovation in drilling is seen as crucial for the energy transition to cleaner and more efficient energy sources.
Kocis emphasized that enhancing current operations with advanced technologies not only promotes greater efficiency but also paves the way for the future of clean energy. “Investing in drilling technologies is crucial for a smooth and efficient energy transition,” he concluded.
Automation of Petrobras’ Drilling Fleet
Recently, Petrobras announced an ambitious goal of saving up to US$ 100 million per year by 2030 through the partial automation of its drilling fleet.
This initiative aims to reduce the average drilling time of offshore wells, which will bring financial, safety, and environmental benefits.
The automation will be implemented gradually, according to the company’s hiring cycles.
The automation of the drilling rigs not only promises to reduce costs but also has the potential to increase revenue by accelerating the production schedule. However, the success of this advancement depends on several factors, including the construction of production units and the installation of the subsea layout.
Additionally, automated drilling will help to increase safety by minimizing the exposure of workers to the high-risk drilling area, known as the “red zone.”
Technology In Favor Of The Oil And Gas Sector
The partnership between Petrobras and GA Drilling marks a significant step in the evolution of drilling technology.
By utilizing lighter and cheaper vessels and introducing autonomous drilling systems, Petrobras not only aims to reduce costs but also improve the efficiency and safety of its operations.
This advancement reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and the transition to a more technological and innovative energy future.
