Petrobras Develops Technique That Minimized Drilling Costs by 50% for Offshore Well 7 GLF 49H ESS in the Golfinho Field in the Post-Salt Region
Petrobras halved the time and cost of drilling some offshore wells using its patented True One Trip Ultra Slender (TOTUS) concept. The technique can be used in certain mature fields in the post-salt region, where geological and reservoir characteristics favor its application.

The development of post-salt offshore wells in Brazil has been a challenging project. Facing water depths of over 2,000 m – and a salt layer 2,000 m thick – to reach reservoirs 7,000 m below sea level, Petrobras has had the necessity to utilize new techniques and procedures.
Petrobras applied the TOTUS concept to complete well 7 GLF 49H ESS in the offshore field of Golfinho, in the Espírito Santo Basin, 62 miles from Vitória. It also hopes to apply the concept to new wells from 2021 to 2025, with potential cost reductions of US$ 20–35 million per well.
This was Petrobras’ first post-salt well built using the TOTUS concept, which reportedly simplifies and reduces the time spent on drilling and completion stages through optimizations and innovations in the design and planning phases.
The TOTUS technique drills the well in just three phases (Ultra Slender) compared to four or five phases in conventional drilling, and a one-trip completion system (True One Trip) instead of two or more moves for conventional completions.
