However, Petrobras stated that it will not reverse the hibernations that have already been implemented, all in shallow water offshore platforms.
The news has not been published externally, only internally for managers who became aware of the state-owned company’s decision yesterday (20) and informed Sindipetro Bahia.
Sindipetro-BA considered that, in addition to mass unemployment, Petrobras’s action could harm the finances of municipalities and the state, with significant losses in tax revenue such as ICMS, Royalties, and ISS, since exploration activity drives a whole chain of service provision. With this news, the municipalities of Candeias, Catu, Alagoinhas, Cardeal da Silva, Pojuca, São Sebastião do Passé, Mata de São João, Araçás, Cardeal da Silva, and Esplanada are directly benefited.
Petrobras is also analyzing the possibility of suspending the decision that also affected outsourced drilling activities, which are experiencing immediate layoffs.
According to federal deputy Joseildo Ramos (PT), responsible for the action pending in the Federal Court requesting to overturn Petrobras’s decision and the layoffs of workers: “Petrobras made a correct decision. It would be absolutely cruel and unnecessary for a company of Petrobras’s importance to contribute to worsening the crisis we are experiencing.”
On average, four thousand jobs are at risk in Bahia. According to Joseildo, there is no plausible justification for the closure of the fields, since oil exploration is profitable and Bahia accounts for 2 billion reais in the company’s revenue.
