Operated by Petrobras, the largest field in the country in reserves has reached a new and impressive production level in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, surpassing the historical mark.
The Búzios field, operated by Petrobras, has broken its production record. Last weekend, it surpassed the mark of 900 thousand barrels of oil per day. Located in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, Búzios is already the largest field in the country in reserves. With this new milestone, it could become the largest producer in Brazil by 2025.
A Giant in the Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin
Búzios is located about 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Petrobras discovered the field in 2010, with operations starting in 2018. This new production record brings Búzios closer to the volume of the Tupi field, also located in the Santos Basin.
The Impressive Production Capacity of Búzios
The field has the most productive wells in Brazil. They are located at over 2 thousand meters deep on the seabed. The thickness of its reservoir is the same height as the Christ the Redeemer and its extension is more than twice that of Guanabara Bay. Currently, six production units are in operation at the site: platforms P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77 and the FPSOs Almirante Barroso and Almirante Tamandaré.

Strategy and Efficiency: The Words of the Presidency of Petrobras
The president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, highlighted the success of the company’s strategy. “In the first half of this year, we put more wells into production than in the entire last year,” she stated. She emphasized that the significant results allowed for the record. “Every record achieved reinforces the correctness of the strategies adopted by the company,” she said. Chambriard mentioned the ongoing effort to increase production while simultaneously reducing costs, focusing on efficient projects and a commitment to a just energy transition.
The Future of Production with New Units and Partnerships
The Director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, Sylvia Anjos, attributed the new production level to the entry of the fifth well of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré. Sylvia Anjos also announced the next steps for the field. “Soon a new unit, the P-78, which is already on its way to Brazil, will start production in this field,” she highlighted. The Búzios field is operated by Petrobras and has as partners the companies CNOOC and CNPC, as well as PPSA.
