Model 2.0 Turbo Diesel With 170 Hp And 4×4 Is Attractive, But Expert Raises Serious Transmission Failure Alert; See If This Fiat Pickup Is Worth The Risk.

The Fiat Toro has consolidated the Sport Utility Pickup (SUP) segment in Brazil, mixing the comfort of an SUV with the utility of a bed. The search for a version of this Fiat pickup with a 2.0 turbo diesel engine with 170 hp, 4×4 drive, and 9-speed automatic transmission, in the range of R$ 115,000, is a reality in the used car market. Data from Stellantis Media confirms the power of 170 hp and a payload capacity of 1 ton, making it an appealing package.

This analysis investigates the viability of this purchase, focusing on the balance between robust performance and a documented history of reliability issues. On one side, the efficient engine and drivability; on the other, a critical risk that could be costly. The question is: is this powertrain an opportunity or a trap for the buyer of a used vehicle?

What R$ 115,000 Can Buy In The Market?

The investigation of the used car market confirms that the budget of R$ 115,000 is realistic. An analysis of listings on the Mercado Livre platform reveals that the “ideal point” is concentrated on models manufactured between 2019 and 2021. The most common versions found in this price range are the Freedom, Volcano, and, occasionally, the Ranch.

As observed in the listings on Mercado Livre, real examples show a 2020 Toro Ranch (88,000 km) for R$ 114,900 or a 2020 Volcano (95,323 km) for R$ 113,890. The buyer will therefore face a clear strategic choice: opt for a newer year (2021) in a base version (Freedom) or accept an earlier year (2019-2020) to get a top version (Volcano or Ranch), which offers more equipment but usually with higher mileage.

The Power Of The 2.0 Multijet Engine And The Efficiency Of The 9 Speeds

The heart of the pickup is the 2.0 Multijet II Turbo Diesel engine. According to the official technical data from Stellantis Media (media.stellantis.com), this four-cylinder engine delivers 170 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and a robust torque of 35.7 kgfm (350 Nm) at just 1,750 rpm. This availability of low-end power ensures agility in overtaking and excellent capability in difficult terrains.

The system is completed by the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission and the 4×4 on-demand drive system. This system operates with front-wheel drive most of the time, coupling the rear axle automatically when it detects a loss of grip. The driver can intervene through the selector, engaging the “4×4” mode (which locks the distribution) and the “4WD Low”, which, although not a low range, adjusts the transmission and throttle to simulate this effect at low speed.

Officially, the pickup accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. The declared consumption is 9.9 km/l in the city and 12.3 km/l on the highway. However, the great asset of this set, according to owners’ reports, is the real consumption at cruising speed, which often can exceed 15 km/l, being one of the main attractions of the model.

Freedom, Volcano, Or Ranch: Which Version To Choose?

Within the stipulated budget range, the buyer will primarily find three versions of the Toro diesel. The Freedom is the starting point for the 4×4 AT9 configuration. It already comes well-equipped with Uconnect multimedia center, traction and stability controls, hill start assist, and 17-inch wheels. It is the pragmatic choice for those who focus primarily on the powertrain.

The Volcano is often considered the version with the best cost-benefit, representing a significant leap in equipment. Over the Freedom, it adds crucial safety and comfort features, such as seven airbags (compared to just two in the base version), dual-zone digital climate control, leather-wrapped seats, keyless entry with push-button start, and 18-inch wheels.

Finally, the Ranch positions itself as the top version with a “luxury country” theme. It shares the equipment base of the Volcano but differs with an exclusive aesthetic package. Highlights include chrome mirrors and details, side steps, roll bar, and exclusive brown leather seats. Choosing the Ranch is largely a style decision.

The Critical Alert: The Chronic Problem Of The Heat Exchanger

YouTube Video

This is the most important section for any potential buyer of a used Fiat Toro diesel. Although the vehicle offers many qualities, it has a history of chronic problems that can result in extremely costly repairs. The main point of failure is the heat exchanger of the ZF 9HP automatic transmission. The site Engel Advogados, specialized on the subject, details the problem: this component, which should use the engine’s coolant to keep the transmission fluid at the ideal temperature, can suffer from internal rupture.

When this failure occurs, the coolant (containing ethylene glycol additive) mixes with the transmission fluid. According to the analysis of Engel Advogados, this contamination is catastrophic. The contaminated transmission fluid loses its lubrication and cooling properties. This leads to the rapid destruction of the internal components of the transmission, such as clutch packs and valve bodies. Symptoms include strong jolts during gear shifts, overheating of the transmission (with a warning on the dashboard), “slipping”, and eventually, complete system failure.

Models manufactured between 2016 and 2020 are the most affected, placing vehicles within the R$ 115,000 budget directly in the risk zone. A complete transmission repair, in these cases, can easily exceed **R$ 20,000**. Therefore, pre-purchase inspection is not only recommended but mandatory. The technician should check the condition and color of the transmission fluid: any “milky” or cloudy appearance is a clear sign of contamination and a reason to immediately discard the purchase.

Verdict: It’s A Specialist Purchase

The Fiat Toro 2.0 Turbo Diesel 4×4 proves to be a vehicle of two faces. Its qualities are undeniable: the driving comfort is comparable to that of a quality SUV, the design is innovative, and the excellent performance-to-fuel consumption ratio is impressive. The ideal profile for this used vehicle is the user who values daily drivability and needs the versatility of the bed for leisure, without the need for the extreme robustness of traditional mid-size pickups (like S10 or Hilux), which are built on a chassis.

However, purchasing a used Toro diesel, especially from the risk years, should be approached with caution. Due to the real financial risk of the chronic heat exchanger problem, this is not a recommended purchase for a layperson. The acquisition requires a careful evaluation by a professional who specifically knows the Multijet engine and the ZF 9HP transmission. The recommendation leans towards the Volcano version (2020-2021) for the complete safety package (7 airbags) and comfort, but only after a thorough mechanical inspection.

The balance between the excellent diesel engine and the risk of the automatic transmission is a divisive issue. Would you dare to buy a 2019-2021 Toro diesel, even knowing about this risk?
