According to Bruno, many people are unaware of the pilot’s work and its impact on preventing maritime accidents.
Mauricio Torronteguy, the event curator, emphasizes that the pilot is responsible for safely guiding ships, both in navigating the access channel and in berthing and unberthing at the terminals.
Bruno adds that events like Ports & Coast Brazil are an opportunity to clarify doubts and demystify misconceptions about this essential activity.
Differences Between Captain and Pilot in Conducting Ships
Unlike the captain, who is trained to navigate in open seas, the pilot has specific training to navigate and maneuver in restricted traffic waters.
In these areas, vessels exhibit different behaviors and there are specific conditions, such as winds, currents, waves, and tides, with which the captain may not be familiar.
The pilot acts globally, protecting society from accidents that can result in severe environmental consequences, loss of lives, damage to public and private property, and even the halt of port activities.
The discussion about the role of Pilotage at Ports & Coast Brazil 2023 aims to enhance public understanding of this profession and its relevance to safety and efficiency in the maritime sector.
