Innovative System Already Generates 16 MWh of Energy and Shows New Possibility for Use of Decommissioned Tracks
A new removable solar power plant has started operations on an active railway line, achieving a production of 16 MWh of energy. This innovation marks a breakthrough in the utilization of underused spaces for clean energy generation.
Innovation: Removable Solar Power Plant for Railways
The Swiss company Sun-Ways has launched the world’s first removable solar power plant on active railway tracks. The system is installed directly over the tracks, with panels that can be removed for railway maintenance without affecting the operation of the trains.
How The Solar Energy System Works
The solar panels are unrolled over the tracks using a special type of wagon. The installation is quick and allows the utilization of kilometers of railways without interfering with train traffic. The initial project is located near Lausanne, Switzerland.

Environmental Impact and Efficiency of The New Solar Power Plant
The solar power plant is already capable of generating around 16 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy. The technology makes use of already existing areas, avoids deforestation, and does not alter the local ecosystem. Additionally, the panels are designed to withstand vibrations and heavy traffic.
The project also reduces the need for new spaces to install traditional solar power plants. Thus, active railway lines can generate renewable energy without competing for land use for agriculture or environmental preservation.
Prospects for Expansion of Technology in The Railway Sector
According to Sun-Ways, the goal is to expand the technology to other railway lines in Europe. This innovation could transform the way railways contribute to renewable energy generation, especially in countries with large underutilized railway networks.
