The Company White Martins Has Just Produced The First Green Hydrogen In South America. The Fuel Is Being Produced In The State Of Pernambuco And Brazil May Be A Pioneer In The Market.
The first Green Hydrogen (H2V) generated in South America is Brazilian and located in Pernambuco. TUV Rheinland evaluated and certified the production of green hydrogen and carbon-neutral hydrogen within the White Martins hydrogen distribution chain according to the TUV Rheinland Norm H2.21. The process of developing and installing the green hydrogen management system and its respective certification took about three months.
White Martins Is The First Company To Produce Green Hydrogen In South America
In total, 156 tons of H2V will be produced annually on an industrial scale. According to the company’s president and Linde’s president in South America, Gilney Bastos, White Martins has over 40 years of experience in hydrogen production in the country and is leveraging its global expertise to ensure that the country becomes a worldwide reference in green hydrogen production.
The executive emphasizes that the expectation is that this will be the first certification of many they intend to have in their region in the coming years. Decarbonization is a priority for the company, which is committed to developing projects that contribute to the energy transition, in line with its mission to develop a more productive and sustainable world.

Present in Brazil for over a century providing industrial and medicinal gases, the company is the first to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale in Brazil and South America. To be classified as “green,” one requirement is that the fuel be produced using renewable sources. In Pernambuco, White Martins can receive up to 1.6 MW of solar energy that will be used in the water electrolysis process for hydrogen production.
Linde Installed Over 200 Hydrogen Refueling Stations
The entire certification process for green hydrogen production in Pernambuco was carried out by the German certifier TUV Rheinland, a company founded in 1872 and specialized in inspecting services related to quality, technical safety, and protection of people and the environment worldwide. Germany is a global reference in certifications and one of the countries investing the most in green hydrogen as a solution for the decarbonization of the economy.
White Martins represents Linde in Brazil, a global leader in hydrogen production, storage, processing, and distribution, with the largest capacity and the biggest liquid hydrogen distribution system. The company operates with the world’s first high-purity hydrogen storage cavern, in addition to pipeline networks totaling approximately 1,000 kilometers globally to meet the demand of its customers sustainably.
Linde is at the forefront of the transition to clean hydrogen and has installed over 200 hydrogen refueling stations and 80 electrolysis stations worldwide.
Hydrogen Supply For Electric Cars
The company also provides the latest hydrogen technologies through its internationally recognized engineering sector, key partnerships, and alliances.
The fuel of the future is produced through a process known as water electrolysis, which separates hydrogen molecules from oxygen molecules using clean energy, constituting the next energy frontier and is considered an alternative for decarbonization, as it can be used in various areas, such as transport and industry.
White Martins is investing in other hydrogen initiatives in Brazil, such as supplying the product for fueling the Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle from Toyota do Brasil.
