Anvisa orders recall of all product batches after identifying contradictory information about gluten and wheat on the packaging.

A decision by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has put Provatti brand popcorn corn at the center of an alert aimed at consumers who rely on accurate information on food labels.

All batches of the product have been ordered for recall by the agency. The measure also suspends the commercialization, distribution, advertising, and use of the food throughout the national territory.

The determination was published in the Official Gazette of the Union on June 12. The reason is related to a discrepancy considered incompatible by Brazilian health legislation.

Label error led to product suspension

An analysis conducted by Anvisa identified conflicting information on the packaging of Provatti popcorn corn.

The label displayed the statement “does not contain gluten”. At the same time, it also showed warnings indicating the presence of wheat or the possibility of cross-contamination by the cereal.

This combination of messages caught the attention of regulatory bodies because the legislation does not allow the use of a gluten-free claim when there is an indication of the presence of wheat or risk of contamination.

Information of this nature needs to be clear, objective, and compatible with each other to avoid misinterpretations by consumers.

Anvisa highlights risk of error for consumers

The inconsistency found may mislead consumers during the purchase of the product.

People with celiac disease or other conditions that require gluten restriction are among the groups most impacted by this type of labeling discrepancy.

Data presented by Anvisa itself indicate that incompatible statements can compromise the correct identification of ingredients and mandatory warnings.

Statements released by the agency reinforce that a food product cannot simultaneously state that it does not contain gluten while also warning of the presence of wheat.

Collection applies to all distributed batches

The resolution published by Anvisa is not limited to a specific batch.

All batches of Provatti brand popcorn corn were included in the recall determination.

Products distributed by Kaza Distribuidora, R&A IndĂșstria, ComĂ©rcio e Distribuidora de Alimentos Ltda. are also covered by the measure.

Sales, distribution, advertising, and use activities remain suspended until the irregularity identified in the packaging is corrected.

Guidance for those who purchased the product

Consumers who have Provatti popcorn corn at home should follow the guidelines released by the manufacturer.

Official information about the recall can be consulted on the channels provided by the responsible company.

Following official communications is considered important to ensure access to guidelines related to the product.

Inspection reinforces the importance of correct labeling

Inspections conducted by Anvisa aim to ensure that the information presented to consumers complies with current health regulations.

Cases involving allergens, gluten, and cross-contamination receive special attention as they directly involve the health of people with dietary restrictions.

Corrections in labeling will be necessary before the product can be marketed normally again.
