Experts Release Estimates for the Dollar Value in 2025, Based on Global Economic Trends and Factors That May Influence the Exchange Rate.

The Brazilian economic scenario has taken new turns this Monday (23), after the release of the Focus Bulletin by the Central Bank. The economists consulted by the Central Bank have adjusted their projections for inflation, dollar value, and the basic interest rate, even with the recent approval of the fiscal package in the Congress.

Dollar Value in 2025

For the first time, the market predicts the dollar closing the year at R$ 6. Last Friday (20), the currency closed at R$ 6.071, after reaching R$ 6.30 at the peak of the previous week.

This movement required successive interventions from the Central Bank, which held daily exchange auctions since December 13, with the exception of Wednesday (18).

Expectations for the exchange rate in the coming years have also increased. For 2025, the dollar is expected to reach R$ 5.90, an increase from the R$ 5.85 estimated last week. In 2026, the projection rose from R$ 5.80 to R$ 5.84, and in 2027 it went from R$ 5.70 to R$ 5.80.

Selic with Upward Trajectory Until 2025

The basic interest rate, currently at 12.25% per year, is expected to rise further, according to new estimates. For 2025, the Selic is projected at 14.75%, a jump from the previously announced 14%. In 2026, the rate also increased from 11.25% to 11.75%.

In the minutes of the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom), published last week, the Central Bank highlighted risks of deterioration in the inflationary dynamic due to new fiscal measures. The document indicates at least two more increases of 1 percentage point in the Selic, should the scenario remain pressured.

Inflation Revised Upwards

The forecast for the IPCA (National Index of Consumer Prices), the country’s main inflation indicator, has also been raised.

In 2024, the estimate rose from 4.89% to 4.91%, while for 2025 there was a more significant jump, from 4.6% to 4.84%. For 2026 and 2027, the numbers remain stable at 4% and 3.8%, respectively.

Limited Impact of the Fiscal Package

The adjustments in the projections come just a few days after the approval in Congress of measures from the fiscal package proposed by the government. The initiative aims to balance public accounts and reduce the deficit, but underwent significant changes during its processing.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the changes reduced the fiscal impact by R$ 2.1 billion, below the initially expected R$ 71.9 billion.

However, economists believe that the reduction could be even greater, ranging between R$ 8 billion and R$ 20 billion, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the package in containing economic pressures.

With a challenging scenario, the Central Bank emphasizes the need for constant vigilance regarding the factors affecting interest rates, exchange rates, and inflation. The market remains attentive to the next decisions and movements in economic policy.
