The State University of Piauí (Uespi) announced on Monday (20) the opening of 1,180 spots in free language courses, distributed between in-person and online modalities.
Registration starts on April 27, exclusively through the institution’s digital platform, from 10 AM Brasília time. This initiative is part of a set of four announcements made by the university’s Department of Languages, aimed at linguistic training in the state of Piauí.
What Uespi is offering in this edition
The launch event took place at 10 AM in the Central Auditorium of the Poeta Torquato Neto Campus in Teresina, gathering managers and representatives of the university to present the details of the opportunities. In addition to the 1,180 spots in free language courses, the other three announcements published by Uespi address complementary areas to linguistics:
-
Get a 100% free online degree at the Federal Institute: IFRN offers 40 spots in Internet Systems with selection based on ENEM scores (2021–2025), applications until 04/05, fee of R$ 25, and admission in 2026.

-

- Conducting a proficiency exam in reading in a foreign language, aimed at candidates for stricto sensu graduate programs — master’s and doctoral
- Selection of teachers for the preparation and correction of proficiency tests
- Formation of a reserve list for monitors, sign language interpreters, and readers who will work in the Proficiency Exam Center (NEP) of the institution
Professor Laura Torres, director of the Department of Languages at Uespi, explained that the expansion of the offer responds to a growing demand identified in recent months. According to her, the demand for languages such as English, Spanish, French, sign language, and Portuguese has increased significantly, which motivated the university to expand the number of spots and diversify the classes — including, for the first time, groups aimed at children aged 9 to 12 years.
Five languages and three age groups in the free courses
The 1,180 spots at Uespi are distributed among five languages, ensuring that candidates find an option aligned with their learning goals. These are: English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Sign Language, and Portuguese. The inclusion of Brazilian Sign Language among the options reinforces the university’s commitment to accessibility and the inclusion of deaf individuals in the educational and professional environment.
The spots are intended for three distinct audiences, expanding the reach of free language courses for different stages of life:
- Children aged 9 to 12 — a new feature of this edition, included after an increase in demand from families
- Adolescents aged 13 to 15
- Candidates aged 16 and above who are currently enrolled in or have completed high school, in public or private schools
The opening of children’s classes represents an important shift in Uespi’s language training policy. Starting language learning in childhood is recognized by educators as a more effective path to long-term fluency, and the university is now occupying this space in a free and accessible manner.
How to register for the Uespi spots starting on the 27th
The entire registration process takes place online, without the need to attend the university in person. Candidates can register on the platform in advance and, starting at the established time, enroll in the desired language courses.
- Start of registrations: April 27, 2026 (Monday), starting at 10 AM (Brasília time)
- Mode: Exclusively online
- Available spots: 1,180 in Uespi’s free language courses
- Registration portal: https://prexdl.uespi.br/inicial
It is worth noting that prior registration on the platform can be done before the 27th, which prevents unforeseen issues at the time of opening registrations. Given the volume of spots and the historical high demand for Uespi’s language courses, the recommendation is to access the system as soon as the period opens.
Internationalization of Uespi as the background of the initiative
The expansion of free language courses is not an isolated action. It is part of a broader institutional guideline, led under the guidance of the rector Paulo Henrique Pinheiro and the governor Rafael Fonteles, which aims to strengthen the internationalization process of Uespi. The goal is to prepare students and teachers to better take advantage of the exchange and academic cooperation opportunities that the university offers.
Ana Luíza, director of International Relations at Uespi, highlighted that linguistic training is a prerequisite for the institution to advance in this direction. Without mastery of languages, a large part of the agreements and international programs remains underutilized — both by students and faculty.
In this sense, the 1,180 spots in the free language courses serve a dual purpose: they democratize access to language learning for the Piauí population and, at the same time, strengthen the human capital of the university itself to operate in an increasingly globalized educational landscape.
A real chance for those who have always postponed learning a language
Private language courses in Brazil often have costs that make learning unfeasible for a significant portion of the population. Uespi, by providing 1,180 free spots in five languages, concretely reduces this historical barrier to access linguistic training.
Whether to improve a resume, advance in a career, prepare a child for the future, or simply fulfill the desire to master a new language, this is an opportunity with a set date and time: April 27, 2026, starting at 10 AM, on the official Uespi portal. Those who prepare in advance will have an advantage.
