The Port Secretary, Diogo Pinoli, Warned About the Current Situation of the Port of Itajaí and Highlighted That the Privatization Process is the Only Way Out for the Complex, As the Investment Plan in Infrastructure Works Will Ensure New Projections for the Site
The National Secretary of Ports and Waterway Transport, Diogo Piloni e Silva, commented on Tuesday (05/17) about the privatization process of the Port of Itajaí in Santa Catarina. Thus, the executive stated that the concession of the complex is currently the best alternative to save the port, although the authorities in the region do not agree, as a strong investment plan in infrastructure works will be implemented.
Investment to Be Made in Infrastructure Works at the Port of Itajaí After the Privatization of the Complex Will Save the Site and Bring New Future Directions
Although the Municipal Government and the Superintendency of the Port of Itajaí are pooling their efforts to maintain the Municipal Port Authority in the complex, the privatization of the port is currently the only way out, according to Diogo Pinoli. The Federal Government has been heavily investing in the concession processes of national ports to the private initiative, and the Port of Itajaí needs this to rise again in the state of Santa Catarina.
Thus, the port secretary emphasizes that this privatization is a matter of survival for the structure and that it should increase competitiveness and ensure the survival of the Port of Itajaí. This happens because an investment plan for infrastructure works at the port will be implemented, thereby ensuring a more favorable projection for new ventures at the site. Diogo also highlighted that all discussions around the concession have already taken place and that the bidding processes should begin during 2023.

The privatization process of the Port of Itajaí will allow for an even heavier investment in the necessary infrastructure works for the complex to rise again, and this would not be possible solely with public authority. Finally, the secretary stressed that the Federal Government found no other way out for the site, although they have studied the possibilities of new projects for the restructuring of the Port of Itajaí, and that privatization is still the best alternative currently.
Privatization of the Port Complex Still Generates Many Discussions, Although Infrastructure Works are Necessary for the Restructuring of the Site
The Municipal Government continues with its opposition to the privatization of the Port of Itajaí, even with the ongoing discussions about the need for infrastructure works at the site. Thus, Senator Dário Berger (PSC-SC) claimed that the “government shows little social sensitivity. Certainly, they do not have a real awareness of what the Port of Itajaí represents for the city and for Santa Catarina, given that the proposed model is a copy of the model considered failed in the privatization of Australian ports, as proven by studies.”
However, Diogo Pinoli countered this statement by highlighting that the current concession model is the main differentiator of the port, as the whole world is looking at Itajaí due to the bold model being proposed. This is because, in the current model, investments would be defined in a contract and made with regulation from the granting authority, in this case, the federal government, thus ensuring greater flexibility for the winning company to carry out contracts more beneficially.
Finally, the secretary recalls that the expected investment for the infrastructure works amounts to a total of R$ 2.8 billion and warns of the collapse of the Port of Itajaí if the privatization process is not carried out during the next year.
