The Thermoelectric Plant, Which Has an Installed Capacity of 857 MW, in Capivari de Baixo, Santa Catarina, Is Part of Engie’s Decarbonization Plan

Engie granted FRAM Capital the exclusive right to purchase the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Plant. The contract is valid for 120 days and will be used for project review. The Thermoelectric Complex has an installed capacity of 857 MW and is located in Capivari de Baixo, in the state of Santa Catarina. The divestment is part of Engie’s decarbonization plan, which aims to focus its business on renewable energies and transition fuels for a low-carbon economy.

The company is looking for alternatives for coal-fired assets, and thermoelectric plants are one of them. Some suggestions were analyzed, but a balance in the negotiation between risk allocation and sales conditions was not reached.

From there, Engie decided to deepen discussions about the future of the terminal with various government sectors, class associations, and civil society. Currently, an alternative plan for the sale and decommissioning of assets in phases is described in detail.

The Thermoelectric Complex

Located in the municipality of Capivari de Baixo, SC, the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex was conceived by the Federal Government in the 1960s to utilize the coal from the southern region of Santa Catarina and provide the electrical system with a strategic reserve, especially during periods of drought.

It consists of seven generating units, grouped into three plants: Jorge Lacerda A, with two generating units of 50 MW and two of 66 MW each; Jorge Lacerda B, with two units of 131 MW each; and Jorge Lacerda C, with one generating unit of 363 MW, totaling 857 MW. The physical guarantee for the commercialization of its energy is 649.9 MW average, and its operating authorization is valid until 2028.
