Unlike previous polar waves, which entered through the interior of the continent, these new pulses of cold air advance through the ocean towards the north. Therefore, they leave out the Midwest and the North, but spread the cold through the eastern strip, maintain the risk of frost in the South, and bring the cold air to Bahia and Sergipe.

The cold does not give a break in the Central-South of Brazil, and new masses of cold air advancing between this Thursday and Saturday will keep temperatures low in an extensive strip of the country, from Rio Grande do Sul to Espírito Santo, even reaching part of the Northeast. The good news for some regions is that these systems will not be able to advance through the interior of the continent, and therefore should not affect the Midwest and the North of the country, unlike the polar waves that passed through Brazil in previous weeks.

The information comes from the forecast released on May 27, 2026, by meteorologist Matheus Manente, from the portal Tempo.com. According to the survey, a sequence of pulses of cold air acts over the country over the next few days, helping to keep temperatures mild and cold until the end of May in parts of the South and Southeast regions, with effects that extend later to the broader Southeast and to areas of the Northeast.

The cold scenario this Wednesday and Thursday

At the moment, a mass of cold air is already advancing through part of the South and Southeast, keeping temperatures low especially in the easternmost municipalities and the coastal strip of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. This includes capitals like Florianópolis, Curitiba, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, where the cold sensation should continue until the end of May.

Because of this, several municipalities in the two regions continued to record minimums below 10°C this Wednesday. Cities like Quaraí, in Rio Grande do Sul, General Carneiro, in Paraná, Monte Verde, in Minas Gerais, and Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo, recorded very low temperatures, between 6°C and 9°C. The forecast for early Thursday morning indicates that much of the South will continue with thermometers below 10°C.

The risk of frost returns in the South

With the presence of these cold air masses, the chance of frost increases again in parts of the country. The risk is more significant in the South region, especially in the Serra Gaúcha and Serra Catarinense, during the early morning and the beginning of the day, when temperatures reach their lowest points.

Frost is a phenomenon that mainly concerns the agricultural sector, as it can cause damage to crops sensitive to intense cold. Therefore, producers in the higher and colder areas of the South tend to be more vigilant during these periods, closely monitoring weather bulletins to take protective measures for the crops when possible.

New cold air mass advances at the end of the week

Between the end of this Thursday, the 28th, and Friday, the 29th, a new, more intense cold air mass advances through the Atlantic Ocean towards the north, reaching Brazil and helping to maintain the low temperature conditions. This mass will not yet be able to advance through the interior of the country, but it will expand the reach of the cold air, also affecting a large part of Rio Grande do Sul, including the capital Porto Alegre, in the south and east of Minas Gerais, and throughout Espírito Santo.

This oceanic displacement pattern explains why the cold is concentrated in the eastern and coastal strip of the country, instead of penetrating the center of the continent. The temperature anomalies forecasted for Friday show precisely this configuration, with the colder air spreading through the South and Southeast and maintaining the cold sensation in the region’s capitals.

On Saturday, the cold reaches the Northeast

Throughout Saturday, the 30th, the cold air mass advances further north and ceases to act in the South region, where temperatures gradually rise again. In compensation, the cold air begins to act in a broader area of the Southeast and also reaches part of the Northeast, especially the states of Bahia and Sergipe, something less common in this part of the country.

This advance towards the Northeast shows the extent of the episode, which, even without being the most intense of the year, manages to bring the sensation of cold to regions usually associated with higher temperatures. For Sunday, projections indicate the cold air mass still acting over much of the Southeast and over northeastern areas, before gradually losing strength.

Why these masses do not affect the Midwest and the North

An important point to understand this episode is the path of the air masses. Since these systems advance through the ocean and not through the interior of the continent, they do not have the strength to reach the Midwest and the North of Brazil, regions that were affected by more intense polar air masses in early May.

This represents some relief for states that have been facing unusual cold in previous weeks. It is worth remembering that all cold air masses that reach Brazil originate in the polar regions of the far south of the planet and advance through South America according to the direction of the winds. When they pass through the interior of the continent, the cold is more intense and widespread; when they come by the ocean, as now, they are concentrated in the eastern strip.

The end of May 2026 confirms the month’s reputation as a transition period towards winter in Brazil, with the South-Central region experiencing consecutive cold days. The new cold air masses advancing between Thursday and Saturday keep temperatures low in much of the South and Southeast, bring cold air to Bahia and Sergipe, and bring back the risk of frost in the South, while sparing the Midwest and North. Following the weather forecast remains the best way to prepare for the coming days.
