Scare in Portsmouth: Fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower leaves injured. Check details of the incident.
A 16-month period of repairs on the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) was marked by an emergency last Tuesday, April 14, 2026. While docked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia, the vessel suffered a small fire that mobilized the crew and shipyard personnel.
The incident occurred during the Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) phase, a modernization schedule that began in January 2025 after the ship faced intense combat against drones and missiles in the Red Sea. During the firefighting efforts, three sailors were injured but have since been cleared for active duty after medical treatment.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the institution reinforced that the emergency protocols worked as expected:
“On April 14, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a small fire that was immediately contained and extinguished by the ship’s crew and the Norfolk Navy Shipyard personnel, who responded promptly, as trained. Three sailors were treated by the ship’s medical team and returned to full service.”
Although the scare was significant, the quick recovery of the injured allowed them to resume their readiness functions without the need for prolonged absence.
Uncertainties about damage and operational schedule
Despite the transparency regarding the injured, the Navy chose to keep certain technical details confidential. So far, naval authorities have not revealed the exact location of the fire source within the steel giant, nor the causes that led to the flames. Additionally, there has been no detailed assessment of potential structural damage or harm to onboard electronic systems.

Context: 16 months in maintenance and the weight of combat
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived at the Norfolk shipyard on January 8, 2025, carrying the wear of one of the most demanding missions in the recent history of the U.S. 5th Fleet.
Between 2023 and 2024, the ship operated under constant threat from Houthi rebels, protecting trade routes from aerial and naval attacks.
This operational overload justifies the depth of the current maintenance, which aims to restore the vessel’s full capacity.
