Petrobras Surprises With Increase in Gasoline and Cooking Gas. Adjustment Affects Consumers and May Trigger Increases in Other Sectors.

Petrobras announced a significant increase in gasoline and cooking gas prices, directly impacting consumers.

The state-owned company reported that, starting this week, gasoline prices at distributors will be adjusted by 7.1%, which equates to R$ 0.20 more per liter.

The cooking gas, in turn, will see an increase of 9.8%, representing a rise of R$ 3.10 in the average price of a 13kg cylinder, now equivalent to R$ 34.70. This news comes as a cold shower, especially in times of economic recovery.

First Adjustment of 2024 at Petrobras

This is the first price adjustment for gasoline in 2024 and the first under the management of Magda Chambriard, the current president of Petrobras.

The last adjustment occurred on October 21, 2023, when prices were reduced. Before that, the last increase in gasoline was recorded on August 16, 2023.

In the case of cooking gas, the last increase was on March 11, 2022, followed by reductions in May and July 2023.

The Reason for the Increase

According to the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom), prices charged by Petrobras were 18% below the values of parity with imported fuel.

The announced increase only covers part of this difference. According to Abicom, this adjustment was expected given the existing discrepancy between domestic and international prices.

Last month, during an event in Rio de Janeiro, Magda Chambriard expressed confidence in international prices and the values charged by Petrobras.

At the time, she stated that the reference price abroad, the state-owned company’s market share, and the opportunity cost for export were appropriate, indicating that there would be no price changes for the company at that moment.

Impact on Consumers’ Wallets

The increase in gasoline and cooking gas prices will have a significant impact on the budgets of Brazilian families.

With gasoline costing R$ 0.20 more per liter and gas cylinders R$ 3.10 more expensive, consumers’ cost of living is expected to rise.

This adjustment may trigger a series of increases in other sectors, given the cascading effects of transportation and energy costs.

More Increases May Occur

The expectation is that new adjustments may occur throughout the year, depending on fluctuations in international oil prices and the policies of Petrobras.

Analysts suggest that the company will continue to monitor the market and adjust its prices as necessary to maintain parity with international costs.
