The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Monday (28) three new decrees that reinforce his anti-immigration policy, directly targeting so-called sanctuary cities. The executive orders provide for the creation of a list of jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal authorities and threaten to cut federal funds from these locations, increasing pressure on states and cities that challenge the government on immigration issues.
Trump Directs Offensive Against Sanctuary Cities
In a move that reaffirms the hardline stance adopted since the beginning of his administration, Trump ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to disclose, within 30 days, an official list of states and cities that, according to the government, hinder the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The initiative, according to a report by The Guardian, seeks to identify the locations that may have their federal funding suspended as a form of political pressure.
Additionally, the plan aims to reverse previous court decisions that prevented funding cuts, claiming that such practices would violate constitutional principles. These actions reinforce Trump’s view that public safety is directly linked to stricter immigration control.

New Trump Decrees Strengthen Legal Support for Police Officers
Another central point of the decrees signed by Trump addresses the strengthening of legal protection for police officers accused of misconduct in the performance of their duties. According to information from El País, a fund will be created for the legal defense of these agents, financed with the collaboration of large law firms that will provide pro bono services.
The measure also revokes guidelines from the previous administration that expanded investigations into discriminatory practices. Now, federal investigations into racist conduct will only be opened based on direct evidence, limiting the actions of civil rights enforcement agencies.
Deportations Hit New Record
The tightening of immigration policy is already showing significant results. Since the beginning of his second term, the Trump administration has deported approximately 139,000 immigrants, according to official data cited by El País. In addition to mass deportations, the president has authorized the use of federal and military agents to support local operations in areas with a high presence of immigrants.
This boost in security measures highlights the White House’s intention to make actions against illegal immigration one of the pillars of domestic policy for 2025.
Criticism of Trump’s Style Gains Strength
The new measures by Trump have generated a strong reaction among Democratic leaders, civic organizations, and parts of public opinion. During the announcement of the orders, Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, accused sanctuary cities of “releasing illegal foreigners responsible for serious crimes,” as highlighted by The Guardian.
However, experts and critics warn that aggressive rhetoric and proposed actions could intensify social divisions and pose a threat to fundamental rights. Opponents argue that Trump is using state apparatus as a tool for political persecution and to reinforce his electoral base.
