The Federal University of Itajubá (Unifei), in MG, will receive investments of R$ 30 million from GIZ for the construction of a research center focused on Green Hydrogen. The university already has the support of several entities, and the project promises to generate thousands of jobs
The Federal University of Itajubá (Unifei), located in southern MG, has been informed that it is one of the selected institutions by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to receive investments of 5 million euros, equivalent to 30 million Reais in direct conversion, for the construction of a Center for Production and Research in Green Hydrogen (CPPHV).

Federal University Will Be a Pioneer in Energy Development
With the construction of the center focused on green hydrogen, the Federal University of the municipality of MG will become a pioneer in clean energy growth on a global scale. Green hydrogen can replace all fossil fuels, with the advantage of not contributing to CO2 emissions that negatively impact the environment.
The Federal University is already promoting several initiatives to obtain hydrogen through gas reform, as well as the use of hydrogen in combustion engines. The CPPHV will have 1 MW of installed power and is expected to be completed at the Federal University of the municipality of MG in 2023.

Saudi Arabia is building in Oxagon a US$ 8.4 billion mega green hydrogen plant with 4 GW of solar and wind energy, 5.6 million solar panels, and capacity to produce 600 tons per day, transforming the desert into one of the planet’s largest clean fuel factories.

Germany and Denmark will transform Bornholm into a Baltic power island, connecting 3 GW of offshore wind power to the grids of the two countries via submarine cables and turning a real island into an international energy hub.

Brazil discovers natural hydrogen in four states and enters the silent race that could redraw the energy transition: Petrobras has already invested R$ 20 million in studies.

A BRICS country surprises the world, doubles electricity generation in just 7 years, nears 9,800 MW, and becomes one of Africa’s new bets in renewable energy.
Additionally, it will be powered exclusively by energy from clean sources, both from solar panels that will be installed at the center itself, and from clean energy supplied by CEMIG, the electric power concessionaire in MG. Thus, the CPPHV will include several resources such as electrolyzer, fuel cell, and various others to promote research focused on green hydrogen.
FIAT, Vale, AMAGGI, and Many Other Large Companies Support Unifei
The project for the construction and development of the CPPHV already has several partnerships with entities that believe in the potential of research with green hydrogen.
According to Jamil Haddad, a volunteer professor, the Federal University of the municipality of MG already has the interest of CEMIG regarding energy storage and the AMAGGI Group, one of the largest Brazilian producers of grains and plant fibers.
Furthermore, Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with FIAT for the use of green steel. Meetings have also been held with VALE Energia for the use of hydrogen in transportation vehicles. ThyssenKrupp will contribute with the technological support of the center. Other contributions also come from MAHLE, FAPEPE, INOVAI, and PS Soluções, among others.
Unifei Comments on the Received Investment
According to Edson Bortoni, Rector of Unifei, this initiative is linked to the initial purposes of the university’s foundation in 1913, establishing energy sustainability as its main focus. It concerns an untouchable capital built over more than 100 years and cannot be disregarded.
For Ancelotti, Vice-Rector of Unifei, naturally, every researcher at the university is free to operate in various fields of science that they prefer. However, if in some way, their research can be linked to energy issues, they will undoubtedly be able to leverage the capital to facilitate resource acquisition and boost their research.
