The city was experiencing heavy rain and fog, which may have impaired the pilot’s visibility. The aircraft was scheduled to take off from Gramado heading to Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo.
Witness Reports
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by smoke and fire in the affected area. Businessman Paulo Benedito Kull was preparing to have breakfast with his family when he was startled by a loud explosion:
“It was very loud, the vacuum broke hotel windows. The smell of burnt fuel is very strong“, he stated.
According to Kull, initially, both hotel staff and guests believed that a vehicle had collided with the gas station located in front of the Hotel Exclusive.
Then, they began to suspect that the explosion might be related to a gas leak. Only minutes later did they receive confirmed information that it was a plane crash.
The businessman reported that guests were instructed to leave their rooms, as there was still a risk of more explosions in the area. “It was a scare. Hotel staff brought a wounded child inside, who was on the sidewalk. There are many vehicles out front, about six ambulances, police cars, and two fire trucks“, he said.
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, issued an official statement.
I am monitoring, along with the state security forces, the sad episode of an aircraft crash in Gramado. We have all the municipal and Canela forces mobilized to respond to the incident. I am also heading to the site to monitor the operation.
At this moment, the priority is to ensure the area is cordoned off and to assist the victims who suffered injuries. Unfortunately, initial reports indicate that the occupants of the aircraft did not survive.
