The city was experiencing heavy rain and fog, which may have hindered the pilot's visibility. The aircraft was scheduled to take off from Gramado bound for Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo.
Witness report
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by smoke and fire in the affected area. Businessman Paulo Benedito Kull was preparing to have breakfast with his family when he was surprised by a loud explosion:
"It was very strong, the vacuum broke the hotel windows. The smell of burning fuel is very strong.“He said.
According to Kull, at first, both hotel staff and guests believed that a vehicle had crashed into the gas station located in front of the Exclusive Hotel.
They then began to suspect that the explosion could be related to a gas leak. Only minutes later did information arrive confirming that it was a plane crash.
The businessman reported that guests were advised to leave their rooms, as there was still a risk of new explosions in the area. “It was a shock. The hotel staff brought in an injured child who was on the sidewalk. There are a lot of vehicles out front, about six ambulances, police cars and two fire trucks.", said
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, released an official statement.
I am monitoring the sad incident of an aircraft crash in Gramado with the state security forces. We have all the personnel from the municipality and Canela mobilized to respond to the incident. I am also traveling to monitor the operation on site.
At the moment, the priority is to ensure the isolation of the area and treat the victims who suffered injuries. Unfortunately, initial information indicates that the occupants of the aircraft did not survive.
